Hanoi, capital city of Vietnam, celebrates and preserves its ancient origins along with the architectural legacy of the French colonial period and today’s modern edifices. The city’s picturesque Old Quarter is the principal site for over 600 ancient pagodas and temples. |
Your day-long exploration of Hanoi starts at 8 AM, with a short jaunt by car to visit the impressive Mausoleum and Museum of Ho Chí Minh, President of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Completed on May 9, 1990, for the 100th anniversary of President Ho Chí Minh’s birth, the four-story museum is designed in the shape of a lotus flower as a symbol of noble character.
Nestled between the Old Quarter and the French Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake is a little oasis shimmering with historic and folkloric tales. On an islet at its center, Ngoc Son Temple pays homage to a heroic 15th-century golden turtle. The sculptured park along the banks of Hoan Kiem is ideal for the practice of tai chi.
Bask in the serenity of One Pillar Pagoda, a temple designed to resemble a beautiful lotus blossom. Originally constructed in 1049 by Emperor Ly Thai Tong to commemorate the long awaited birth of an heir, this architectural gem has been rebuilt through the centuries.
The famous Flag Tower was built in 1812 and is composed of three platforms and a tower. The tower receives sunlight through 36 flower-shaped and six fan-shaped windows. The Military History Museum, formerly the French expeditionary barracks, opened in 1958 and exhibits the history of the Vietnamese nation.
Your comprehensive journey through Hanoi will conclude with a one-hour bicycle trip around the trading area in the historic Old Quarter. In addition to its precious antiquities, this district is famous for its small artisans and merchants, including many silk shops.
