Perfume Pagoda, a two-hour drive from Hanoi, is actually a vast complex of temples and shrines built into the limestone Huong Tich mountains. Located in the My Duc hamlet in the province of Ha Tay, Perfume Mountain is a stunning and mystical setting, chosen by a monk as he searched for enlightenment during the reign of Le Chinh Hoa (1680–1705). |
A 1 1/2-hour boat trip on the Yen (Swallow Bird) River is followed by a 1- to 2-hour climb up a 1,000-year-old path of ancient stones with breathtaking views all along the way. Traditionally, your first visit is to Den Trinh, the registration shrine. Among the other sights you’ll see: Thien Tru temple, built in the 18th century and famous for its granite monolith and the many towers erected by various kings during their reigns; and Huong Tich grotto, renowned as “the most beautiful grotto under the southern sky,” filled with colorful stalagmites and stalactites. Discovered 2,000 years ago, there has been a shrine at Huong Tich since 1575.
On the way back to Hanoi, you’ll visit one of the best know Vietnamese trade villages, Van Phuc. The sound of silk looms has filled Van Phuc for 1,000 years, and the luster of this rich and colorful fabric has inspired many poets and composers to rhapsodize about the beauty of Ha Dong silk.
