Set atop a 410-foot (125-m) hill, Meharangarh Fort dominates the landscape. Commenced in the mid-14th century and improved upon by successive rulers, this fort is one of the largest in India. Pass through the gates and the 118-foot-high (36-m), 69-foot-wide (21-m) walls and into a world of opulence and power still partially preserved. Wander the halls of palaces and museums enclosed within the fortress walls. See the grandiose “Pearl Palace,” with its hidden balconies, and the “Palace of Flowers,” with its exquisite “entertainment chamber” richly adorned with gold filigree.
Nearby, just outside the fortress walls, admire the painstaking marble work at Jaswant Thada. Thin sheets of finely-carved and polished marble were used to create this spectacle of fine architecture in 1899. Stroll through the interior to witness the brilliant workmanship that went into building this incredible structure.
