Details

The erstwhile capital of colonial India, Kolkata is historically known as the sub-continent’s cosmopolitan center for education, science, and culture. Begin your city tour at Jain Temple—built in 1867 by an influential connoisseur of art. Standing at the center of an extravagant garden and grounds, this richly adorned temple is ornamented by its numerous spires, curved lines, and ornate architecture.

Stop next at the Indian Museum—one of the oldest museums in Asia. Founded in 1814 and housed within an impressive mansion, this multi-discipline museum is home to a vast, rare, and eclectic collection of fossils, mummies, antiques, paintings, meteorites, and much more. Next up is the palatial Victoria Memorial—perhaps Kolkata’s most famous sight and a museum primarily containing artifacts and antiques from India’s colonial period of British rule. The stately architecture and graceful ornamentation of this grand structure testify to England’s previous influence over India.
