Details

The Phlegraean Fields (literally ‘the burning fields’) is a region rich in volcanic activity. With its almost otherworldly terrain, it’s easy to imagine this landscape as the backdrop of myth. This tour takes its name from Enea, the principal character of Virgil’s epic Latin poem.

Visit Averno Crater Lake, thought in ancient times to be the entrance to the underworld. The sulphurous vapours that rise from its centre gave the lake its name (the Latin ‘Aorno’ means ‘without birds’ alluding to the fact that birds would not fly across the lake). You’ll also visit the Monte Nuovo volcano, the youngest in Europe. Formed in 1538, the volcano is covered in dense vegetation that becomes a pine forest.

Finally you’ll explore the Mirabella Vineyard, covering 4 hectacres along the Averno Crater. The properties of this unique climate produce quality grapes. After a short guided visit of the vineyard, enjoy tasting local wines and dishes. You’re free to spend as long as you like here. As a working vineyard for 1000 years, it’s a quietly magical place.
