Details
Built in 1870, Tavern on the Green's present-day incarnation owes little to its Victorian roots. This Central Park gem is better defined by its whimsical, Oz-like ambience, which the restaurant has been refining steadily since the mid-'70s.
Walk into Tavern on the Green, and your first impression is one of glittering light: the gleam of sunlight pouring through glass walls and the reflected light from etched mirrors and copper and brass sconces. And then there are the 45 chandeliers, composed of more than 15,000 pieces of crystal and placed throughout the rooms.
Once your eyes adjust to the light, other details begin to emerge. Hand-hewn rafters and vaulted, hand-carved plaster ceilings rise above decor that varies from rustic baroque to charming rococo. Stained glass, rare wormy chestnut wall panels, and elaborate hand-painted murals accent the walls, bringing the building to life.
In the enjoyment of the surroundings, however, don't forget that the Tavern on the Green also is known for its food. Presenting an eclectic menu of contemporary and seasonal fare, the restaurant has received numerous accolades from critics over the years.
And from May through September, guests may dine al fresco in the outdoor garden or relax with a cocktail at the Garden Bar.
