Pale, beautiful, and pure as the moon, Princess Salomé is an object of desire not only for her father-in-law, Herod, but also the captain Narraboth. But the young princess falls in love with the prophet Jochanaan and—ultimately—provokes their deaths.|
Based on a play by Oscar Wilde and turned into an opera by Richard Strauss, Salomé reflects the dark side of Strauss' work. The opera is a veritable symphony, whose wild and unleashed score sometimes approaches hysteria.
