In South Africa, the term township usually refers to the poor urban living areas that non-whites were forced into during the Apartheid Era. Most South African towns and cities have at least one township on their outskirts. Ahead of the 2010 Football World Cup the government and local authorities now aim to renew the view of townships in South Africa. The aim is to educate tourists of township attractions, not only to stimulate business but also to give tourists a different view of South Africa.
The Olivienhoutbosch Township started about ten years ago as a squatter camp when people flocked to the city in search of work. Today it is home to 100,000 people who live here very much the same way that millions of South Africans living in townships do. You will go on a guided tour of the neighbourhood, visit the hospice, old age home, school, and the informal orphanage. Your evening ends with a sumptuous meal with a local family.
