In 1987, Qingdao became a German concession and a major German naval base in the Far East. The German Imperial government began construction on the foundations and streets of the city seen today. Qingdao has consequently become a unique city in China, blending both its Chinese ancestry with a rich European feel.

Your tour begins with a visit to the city pier, a structure built in 1891 adjacent to the beautiful beaches. The pier stretches 1,445 feet (440 m) out into the sea, where a traditional octagonal pavilion sits atop its terminus.

Stroll the grounds at Xiaoqingdao Park to see tiny Xiaoqingdao Island with its historic white lighthouse. Then stop by beautiful Qingdaoshan Park, where the featured attraction is an underground fort built by the Germans that you’ll tour before a stop for lunch.

Perhaps the most famous highlight is the Tsingtao Beer Museum. Founded in 1903 by German settlers, this brewery turned museum chronicles Tsingtao Beer’s century-old history through interactive and entertaining displays—not to mention samples of China’s internationally known brew that is sold in more than 50 countries worldwide.

Move on to one of the best viewpoints Qingdao has to offer. Climb 427 feet (130 m) in a high-speed elevator to the viewing platform of the TV Tower for a panoramic view of the city’s red-tile roofs, green trees, cerulean sea, and blue sky.

Your all-day tour comes to a finish with a visit to the Qingdao Museum. Browse the vast collection of Chinese paintings, artifacts unearthed from the Paleolithic and Neolithic eras, and treasures from the Northern Wei Dynasty.
