In 2002, the Gallery began a dramatic new chapter in its 110-year history when it launched the ambitious Transformation AGO expansion project. Designed by celebrated architect Frank Gehry, the new AGO features 190,000 square feet (17,652 square meters) of new and renovated space, including a 47% increase in art-viewing space. With its dramatic sculptural staircases and bold use of wood and galleries infused with natural light, the Art Gallery of Ontario is an extraordinary new home for extraordinary new art.

As the imaginative center of the city, the transformed Art Gallery of Ontario dramatically enriches your experiences and provides new access to the full vibrancy of the art museum. From David Altmejd’s monumental installation The Index to Peter Paul Rubens’ masterpiece The Massacre of the Innocents—a highlight of the internationally acclaimed Thomson Collection—the AGO’s permanent collection is the new focal point post-transformation.

The Art Gallery of Ontario operates two additional services for the public. At 60 McCaul St., the AGO’s Gallery School offers art education opportunities for all ages and skill levels taught by a dedicated group of teachers and artists. The AGO’s Art Rental and Sales Gallery is located at 481 University Ave. and offers a wide selection of amazing work for sale and rent chosen from local galleries and suitable for all budgets. The Art Gallery of Ontario also houses a restaurant, café, and a retail store.
