What a Treasure

I’ve stayed in Las Vegas many times and have to say I’ve walked past the Golden Gate several times but after staying there once, I am now a fan and will definitely make that my place to stay. The rooms are ultra-chic if a little small but as a single traveller it was fine by me. The staff were all friendly and helpful, the food at the restaurant and the cafe was excellent. In the evening there’s entertainment and there is a party atmosphere. But more importantly it is the lowest price I’ve ever paid for a hotel. I am grateful I found out about this hotel, it was a fantastic place to stay.

If you have the opportunity to see a show at the Pearl at the Palms, take it. I saw a concert there and it might have been one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. The venue provides an intimate setting and the acoustics are fantastic. I expected my ears to be bleeding but the music was loud, but clear and no ringing ears afterward. The staff were friendly and getting in and out was no problem.

A Mixed Bag

We stayed at the GG for five nights in late October, with mixed results. First, the good: Excellent price & nice central location. Great shrimp cocktail! Hotel staff allowed us to check in 2 hours early on Saturday. Beautiful LCD television in room. Extremely comfortable mattress. Free local and 800 number phone calls from room (a rarity in Vegas!) And the not-so-good: Bathroom had no tub (just an older shower). Bed was advertised as a "queen," but was actually smaller. Bed length was extremely short (barely over six feet long). Heating/cooling system was problematic . First night, we discovered a two-inch long cockroach in shower. Staff claimed that hotel is constantly fumigated to control roaches. Our room was right next to maids’ station. Maids arrived for work each day between 6 & 7 AM, and were very noisy. We go to Vegas once a year to gamble, and consequently never spend much time in hotel rooms (usually only about seven hours a night), so the Golden Gate was "okay" for us, but I’m not really sure if we would go back or not. The real turn-off was the tiny bed and the cockroach in the shower .

Best shopping buys are at the Vegas outlet mall near the South Transit Center; just take the Deuce past the strip going south (opposite way from downtown/Fremont Street). Also, you’d be amazed at some of the items you can pick up at the 99 cent store on Flamingo, next to the main library.
