HEM Hotel Amsterdam- Say No to the SUper Saver Annex rooms-Main hotel only!

The main hotel is nice, but avoid the super saver deal! This is an annex that is very damp and moldy. My original rooms were in the annex, and I could not stay there. Luckily, I was able to upgrade my room to the main hotel for an additional fee. If you stay here, insist on the main hotel, DO NOT Stay in the annex (super saver rooms). The Hotel is a bit far from downtown, but the #2 tram is only 2 blocks away. This tram goes to all the tourist sites (Leidseplein, Museum district, Dam Square, Central Station, etc.). The courtyard is very relaxing, and the staff are friendly and helpful. Lots of out of town tourists, so you will meet a diversity of people. Schipol airport is only 10 minutes away. Food in the hotel is also quite good.

Be prepared to walk, comfortable shoes are a must. The city transportation is easy and accessible to any location, but walking the city is just so much more personable and beautiful. The local people are very warm and friendly and many speak english or will find someone for you that does. Enjoy the city, it has something to offer everyone, regardless of your life style. The food is as varied as any metropolitan area, Thai, Italian, Chinese, etc. Take your time! Amstrerdam is very relaxed. Don’t plan your days to the max, accounting for every minute. Be spontaineous, travel some of the paths less taken and let the city soak into your soul, it truly is a warm and wonderful place.

a bit run down and high parking rates

I stayed there one night. I don’t remember what price I payed, so maybe it was just cheap and I should not expect too much. There were many additional costs. Price of internet: 10 Euro’s for a day (but no possibility to have it for a shorter time at a lower price). Parking your car is 12 Euros for the night. Then 2 SQ meters of carpet in front of the bathroom were soaking wet, when I entered the room, probably due to a shower cabin that does not close well. The room was quiet though and quite large.

Poor choice

very bad service attitude from the front desk especially one of the black male staff. Very mean and not helpful at all. The hotel is too far from the city center, even to the nearest tram station.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

drinking water is very expensive by any standard. Bring your own water from hotel room.
