Kauai Sands - Pictures do not tell the story
This hotel was the worst hotel we have ever stayed in for a vacation in Hawaii or anywhere. The pictures of the hotel illustrate vintage, older Hawaii lodging right on East Coast waters. If you have a future reservation there, change it as soon as possible. Here are some details. There were no restaurant services, as advertised. The hotel staff were unhelpful to an extreme (although some individuals tried to be helpful despite the low expectations of hotel management). The hotel is very old, in poor physical condition, and barely liveable. The list of what did not work includes the A/C, lighting, toilet, the security doors, etc. Pool hours were 9 am to 6 pm which left no time to swim after a lovely day seeing the sights. Kauai is gorgeous and we had a great time overall. It would have been nice to hang out at the hotel some, but the hotel conditions made it miserable. Buyer be warned.

Sup by the Ocean
We liked the closeness to the Ocean and each evening we bought take out dinner and ate by the ocean with the waves crashing and the lovely evening breeze. We also liked closeness to the most popular breakfast restaurant on the Island. Staff was most pleasant and helpfull.
Traveler's tip on shopping
There was a Wal-Mart, Costco and Barnes & Noble in one shopping center

Pretty good
Nothing fancy, but the hotel had everything I needed. Perfect if you just need a place to sleep. Inexpensive, although they do try to "upgrade" you to a room with a pool view instead of parking. Didnt think it was necessary. Theres a small shopping center nearby, but other than that, you probably do need a car to get around in Kauai.
