Bring your ear plugs!
This is a very cute hotel right in the lively downtown area of Monterey. Easy walking distance to everything you could want to do. The staff is super friendly and accomodating. When I arrived I was put in a room with a window that looked out into what looked like an elevator shaft in the making. This was not good! I asked if they had another room and they put us on the top floor in a room with 2 windows and a very nice view. It is REALLY noisy at night. I checked in on Thursday and checked out Sunday - I hardly slept the entire time I was there. All of the partiers at the clubs and bars in that downtown strip were really loud and it was seriously irritating. Sounded like I was standing in the middle of the street from about 11pm 4am each night. Yelling, fighting, cars, police, and just general loud drunkeness - aargh! There is no air conditioning at this hotel and most of the rooms only have 1 window. This can be a problem if it is particularly warm or humid as it was when I was there. There is also no elevator, but the bell-boy is happy to run your luggage up and down the flights of stairs!

Sleepless, Noisy Nights
If you are a light sleeper, this hotel is not for you! I was a little nervous when we found complimentary ear plugs in our room, but nothing could have prepared me for how loud the nights were. Theyre not kidding around when they say the hotel was built before sound-proofing was invented...this was the loudest hotel in which I have ever stayed. I could hear guests in their rooms down the hall...every step taken up or down the stairs..and the nightlife noise from the street was deafening and obnoxious! The hotel itself is beautiful and elegant (extra-tiny rooms, though), and the continental breakfast served every morning was well-stocked and clean and fresh, but unless you want to pay a significant amount for valet parking, you have to feed the meter or move your car around on the street every two hours. Also, one morning, I found a tiny worm on my unused bath towell.
