A fine hotel if you dont mind a little bit of walking
I stayed here for 5 days for a conference in the city in Oct 2009. The hotel is a bit off the beaten track, but its a little oasis in a poor neighborhood. It is safe and the staff is friendly and helpful. Breakfast is by the pool and when the weather is nice, its great. Good quality coffee and pastries and fruit. The bedroom and bathroom were clean and smelled fresh. The bed was comfortable and clean. In order to get to the more pleasant parts of town, you have to walk through some really poor neighborhoods. The hotel is surrounded by some nice ethnic restaurants - mostly Chinese and Vietnamese as the hotel is in the Little Saigon neighborhood. As for the noise, I can see it can be noisy because of the windows to the courtyard area, but in my case it was really very quiet because it was chilly outside and nobody partied outside.

Hotel is not in the greatest area, but not as bad as expected
The hotel wasnt bad. The neighborhood wasnt the greatest, but it wasnt as bad as we expected. The location in regards to busing wasnt bad, however; we would have liked being closer to the cable cars. That made for a bit of a walk if we wanted to use them as our main mode of transportation. It did force us to walk a lot, which was good. The hotel is secure at night which was a plus, and the noise wasnt as bad as other reviews made it out to be. As far as the time spent there, it wasnt bad at all, just not the most convenient place to stay if you want to spend time in China Town, Union Square of Fishermans Wharf.
Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks
Definately get a Muni pass, it is good for all the buses, including the F-line and the cable cars.
