As Close to the Airport as You can Get
At the beginning and end of our trip we arrived in Bangkok late at night and departed early the next morning. This hotel was perfect for us. We walked out of the airport at Door 4 where the shuttle van was waiting and they had our name on their list. The shuttle delivered us to the hotel entrance minutes later. The rooms are attractive and clean, the bathrooms are huge and the beds are comfortable. Since our luggage was checked through, we were happy to have all the bathroom amenities including hair dryer as well as the freshly-pressed bathrobes. On our second pass through Bangkok everything lined up so well that 30 minutes after we walked off the airplane we were opening the door to our room at the Novotel. And there was a shuttle waiting at 4:00 am to take us back to the terminal.
Bangkok Airport has an extensive duty-free shopping area and is a good place to pick up last-minute gifts.

Suvarnabhumi Airport Novotel
We stayed in the Suvarnabhumi Airport Novotel for one night on each end of our trip to Phuket. The staff was friendly, courteous and helpful. The facilities were very nice and clean. There is a nice pool area with bar and grill. It is a convenient way to transit in and out of Bangkok without going into the city.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
There is a Novotel desk at the airport to coordinate hotel shuttle pickup. Very convenient. Also, ask for feather pillows. Much more comfortable than polyester ones in room.

Convenience at a price
The proximity of the hotel to the airport was fantastic-- it made the prospect of an early morning flight tolerable. The distance from downtown, however, made any sightseeing impractical especially on an overnight stay. The food in the Chinese restaurant was both mediocre and expensive. There are much better choices in Bangkok.
