great find near historic places and bay
My partner and I havent had very good luck with Japanese hotel chains since we moved to Tokyo a few years ago. We tend to stick to Starwood properties when available. None was available in Nagasaki so I booked Monterey on expedia and Im glad I did. What a find. The Portuguese motif manages not to be cheesy and even a bit classy in a sub-tropic holiday way. The room was big even by American standards. We got room 711 overlooking Hollander Slope and the old Womens University. The windows open to let in the salty air but its often humid so Id leave them closed. We had breakfast in the restaurant one morning. Its actually not a bad deal and I dont eat fish or meat so if I can say that then it aint bad. Cab drivers with big smiles on their faces are waiting right outside. Cobblestone streets and Oura Church are right outside. Nagasaki is Japan made friendly and this hotel is charming. Whats not to like?

Adequate and affordable
One block away from the trolley line. Walking distance to the wharf. Modest but affordable. The staff at the front desk are very pleasant, but they spoke little English. I guess thats ok since no one speaks Japanese in US hotels. We were given only one key for the two of us. I didnt demand another. There is a token on the keyring that one must use to enable the electricity in the room. I would stay here again, but somewhere else if I were trying to impress someone.
The trolley will take you near most destinations one would want to go. About a buck or two each way. Some hotels sell an all day pass for a modest sum. Taxi service is affordable. We took it because there were always 3-4 of us. There was always one waiting outside the hotel. Make sure to visit the A-Bomb Visitors center at Nagasaki Peace Park. Mount Inasa has great panoramic views.
