“The Carlton Hotel is the best stay in SF for stay for the price!"
We had a perfect stay at the Carlton from Nov. 4th to 9th. The staff the best. They put our friend close in #610 and us in #608. None of us found the walls paper thin. The view wasnt great but we didnt care. You could hear the doors in the hallways and water running but nothing unordinary. We could hear sirens sometimes from a nearby fire station and hospital but it wasnt bad. I sleep with earplugs anyways. The room is a good size with a desk and big closet with safe, iron and ironing board. The bed was sooo comfortable! rooms clean and the perfect temperature. Nice Moroccan, modern decor, a coffee maker in room with complimentary coffee, teabags would be nice. Its a green hotel so you can have laundry done or not, just let the cleaning staff know. They also have recycling bins which is great. There are 2 computers in the Lobby, you get 20 minutes free per day on your Visa. The free wine tasting in the evenings from 5:30 to 6:00pm is awesome and its very popular!! We thought the location was great, lots of buses go nearby and not too far from Market St. and Union square. Good shops and restaurant nearby. I know there are some rough spots in the Tenderloin, we had no problems. The SAHA Restaurant is fabulous and we were not disappointed. The food was amazing! and they had Vegan options. a reasonable amount and price for the fantasic flavor sensations there. So I would just say "stay here" next time you are in San Francisco its a FABULOUS Hotel!
Alcatraz is worth a visit on your to SF but plan it ahead if you can as its busy. Golden Gate park is very nice. Union Square for Shopping. Haight / Adshbury for Shopping and atmosphere. (and Amoeba Records is your into Vinyl like my man) Amazing Restaurants all over the city. I highly recommend the SAHA at the Carlton as I said before. Get a yourself a Muni pass at the little booth before you go down to the stairs to the station at the Powell station. Only pay for how many days you need when you get there, its $24 bucks for a week I think and you scratch out the days on the card you paid for and are there and can use it for all Municiple (Muni) transit . on the street, buses, trollys, cable cars and subway type Muni, its just not good on the Bart. This way you dont dont have to worry about digging for change and can hop on and off things all over the city.

Nice hotel, but...
Very nice hotel for the money, but a little too close to the not-so-nice part of town.
