It was just ok, we expected more.
No one at the door to welcome or help with bags upon arrival. They had to verify if our room was even ready, which took a while, mind you it was after 3PM (check-in time). Stood around for a while waiting to be seated for afternoon tea as well as breakfast the following day because a host was nowhere to be found. The only friendly face we encountered was the receptionist at the spa. The spa treatment room was cold, not comfortable. The only highlight of our stay was dinner. Food and service were great. No offer to help with bags during check-out. It just seemed like a "cold" hotel, no warmth (not talking about temperature here) and not very inviting.
Traveler's tip
I would only recommend this hotel if you get a good rate online. The hotels regular rates are not justified when you look at the level of service.

A great retreat
The hotel was a fabulous small country property. Excellent service, beautiful grounds with fine dining.

Check out the many nearby wine vinyards for great regional wines.

Beautiful and Relaxing!
Our second visit here for a long summer weekend, and we were just as pleased on this visit as we were on our first a few years ago. Absolutely beautiful setting, charming accomodations and perfect service and attentiveness on the part of the extensive staff. (High staff to guest ratio.) My husband thought the place feels a bit worn, but that was not a detraction for me. It is, after all, an old building filled with antiques. Highlights; lounging by the pool and after dinner drinks in the restaurant bar (very cozy!)
Traveler's tip on dining
Having tried several very good restaurants in Charlottesville our favorite is Mas, a true tapas restaurant. Fabulous Spanish wines and a huge range of very tasty tapas. Dont let the more-shabby-than-chic neighborhood deter you.
