Excellent hotel in downtown Helsinki
The Hotel Helka is my favorite place to stay in Helsinki. Its close to the bus station at Kamppi, and there are a ton of restaurants and bars close to the hotel; perfect location. Beds are a bit small, and a touch on the firm side. Plenty of comfy chairs, though the suites lack a formal desk for getting work done. High-speed wireless internet in the lobby is good, but its a wired connection in the rooms, and its quite slow and unreliable. The rooms are beautifully decorated, and the suites (with in-room steam bath) are awesome. Standard Scandinavian-style buffet breakfast; its good, but needs more fresh fruit. Overall, for the price of a night at a Scandic chain hotel, you get much nicer decor, a better breakfast, and a more comfortable bed and facilities, at the cost of poor Internet access and no real comfortable place to work in the rooms.
Traveler's tip on dining
There is a great Nepalese restaurant just down the street from the hotel (Pikku Nepal); great for vegetarians, though less so for vegans. I go here every other trip. :-)

Great Room Great Location
We had a wonderful stay at the Helka. Rooms were clean, staff was very helpful. If you want a great room without the great price try the Helka.
Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks
This is a couple blocks from city center. About a block from Church in the Rock. Great savings for having to walk a couple of blocks. Would stay there again.

nice, affordable place in helsinki
I stayed in July 09 and had a pleasant stay. The hotel helped me with directions, bike rental, and taxi service. They have free wifi in the lobby which worked well. (only one internet termial though) Breakfast buffet was ok. Sauna looked brand new, but only available for limited hours in the morning. Room is comfortable, though no in-room carpet (only hardwood floors). Location is good. Its about a 15-20 min walk down to the Esplanade through a busy mall and other active cafes and bars. If youre noise sensitive, Id ask for a room on the inside. Id stay there again.
Traveler's tip on nightlife
If youre looking to get out, you need not walk all the way to the Esplanade. Theres a club and a bar (hard-rock music) just down the street from the hotel, plus an Australian bar around the corner on the mall that was pretty hip.
