want to go back
Hotel was great, food was expensive. We went beginning of Nov 09 and it was quite empty, but that was fine. Nice and close to rainforest and Culebra Island. Bioluminescent cruise was great. Best to set it up not through hotel because thay charge 2X as much. Good to have a rental car. Parking lot there for enterprise was convenient and allowed us not to have to eat at restaurants in hotel $$$.

El Conquistadore
Hotel was Nice, Private Beach and Specialty resturants were very good. Breakfast resturant was not very good, Overprices and lousy food. The stores in the Hotel were barley open, same with the local town stores. Everyone blamed it on the poor economy, and very low booking percentage.
Rain Forest and water falls.

Nice but not what I expected
El Conquistador is a nice hotel if you are looking for a 3 or 3.5 star resort. From what I understand they did a $100 million renovation recently, but only renovated the bedrooms, the bathrooms are still old and the grounds in the hotel still need renovation and some maintenance. They have a section of the resort called Las Casitas which are apartments that you can rent. That section is really beatiful but the hotel itself is OK. The beach is not right in the hotel, is a private island that you need to take a boat to get there. The boat departs every hour starting at 9:00 AM. The last ride back is at 5:30 PM. Although I prefer the beach right there I have to say the island is beautiful and the beach is really nice. Since we went in low season there were very few people at the beach or taking the boat ride. In high season that whole trip could be a hassle. I didnt like the location, it was about 1 hour to Old San Juan by car. We rented a car which was convenient. However it was too far to go every day to the city plus traffic is pretty bad into the city. Old San Juan is really nice with tons of good restaurants and shops so I would it like to go there more often. Food at the hotel restaurants is good but a little expensive. Overall I give the hotel a 3/5 in grounds and room accomodations, a 4 for the beach , 4 for the food and 4 for the service. Puerto Rico is great and would love to go back. Next time however I would stay in a more modern/newer hotel and closer to the city.
Try to go in low season if you are looking for peace and quiet. There were no that many people, easy to find a restaurant in the city withouth any wait. Also very nice at the beach with just a few people around. If you are looking to meet people though, low season might not be the best time. They told high season goes from November 30 through April.
