An oasis
Hakone is beautiful in the autumn and Fujiya has a great garden. The hotel captures the essence of an elegance from bygone years, brings your pulse down immediately. It has my unreserved recommendations.

Good budget selection
The Fujiya Hotel is an historical building (they have their own little museum) in downtown Hakone, conveniently located near several bus stops. There are several shops within walking distance. Its about a 45 minute bus ride to Odawara station. Their service is impeccable, they have a spectacular Japanese garden / atrium, and the restaurants serve delicious food. The hotel is quite dated - it doesnt look like they have really updated it in a few decades. Celebrities and dignitaries have stayed here (photographic evidence lines the hallways), but probably not since the 80s. Although its old and dated, it is clean, has good basic amenities, and it is a traditional Japanese onsen resort. The onsen (hot springs) water is piped directly into your rooms bathtub, which is very nice! We enjoyed our stay here, and thought it was good value for the price we paid.
There is a convenience store just down the street that serves noodles and quick meals - much cheaper than eating at the hotel.
