Nice place to stay.
We enjoyed our stay at Volcano Hale. We were the only guests at the time so it was probably better than usual in not having to share a bath and being very quiet and private. That being said I think it would be a nice stay even if more occupied. It is convenient to the Park, has a good kitchen, and internet access available. We highly recommend Volcano Hale.

Nice Little Cottage
I recently stayed at Volcano Hale, part of a few different lodgings available in the small hamlet of Volcano. Only a few miles from the Volcano National Park, it is ideal for exploration and is well priced. The cottage is really, really quiet, and coming from NYC, I found it a bit hard to rest at first, but thats my own neurosis (used to lots of noise). The room was cute and clean with a king size bed and television, and the owner is extremely friendly and helpful. They serve a lovely and inexpensive breakfast at the main house a few blocks away (where you have to check in), and where you can also access the internet for free. Be warned, the town rolls up very early, so plan ahead in terms of dinner plans, fuel, water, anything at all. For the money, I couldnt have asked for a nicer place and would definitely recommend it.
Traveler's tip on local attractions
Bring your empty water bottles to the local gas station. They have a water purifier outside where you can get about a gallon of water for only 30 cents!!

Budget Option Only
If you are on a budget (as I was) and can live with thin walls, no A/C or functional fan, shared bathrooms, and uncleanliness, then this place is for you - otherwise, Id look elsewhere. I could live with everything but the uncleanliness(floors/kitchen/bathrooms were dirty and stayed that way). The dust on top of the fridge appeared to rival the petroglyphs in age.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
Upside: close proximity to Volcanoes National Park. About 1/2 hour from Hilo.
