Lovely resort
Our family of four had a wonderful trip to the Occidental Grand right before Christmas. We were immediately impressed with the property. The open lobby is elegant, and the landscaping resembles a botanical park. The staff was accomodating and attentive. Each guest room is in a beautiful three story Spanish colonial complex off a circular, lush atrium, and you really don’t miss the lack of an ocean view. We found the food to be delicious, and the variety was more than adequate if you alternate the evening meal between the buffet and the two restaurants. The wait staff was professional and tried very hard to please. Drinks were readily served in the lobby bar or by the beach or pool, and top-shelf liquor was available by request. The Occidental Grande is a large property, and my family enjoyed the space. I have lupus, however, and found the extra walking difficult. The weather does not always cooperate with tourists. The Occidental beach is gorgeous, but we had limited access because of "black" flag conditions. The on-site dive shop arranged two dives for us that were good but not great. We rented a car "at" (actually, across a busy intersection from) the airport. There was a problem with our reservation amount, but Dollar ultimately honored the quote. We enjoyed exploring the east side of Cozumel by car and had no problem driving around the island.

Nice resort, bad receptionist service
bartender cheating on the alcohol service...almost no tequila on the margarita-sour water with salt. made a reservation for the restaurant 2 days ahead, when we arrived at the restaurant, they had no record of our reservation because the receptionist who made the reservation didn’t give us a ticket for the reservation--meaning, she did not reserve anything. we did not know we should have a ticket & 4 of us showed up at the restaurant embarrassed & almost left but the manager managed to give us a table & for that, we had to tip him good. i don’t know if it’s a game they play but it’s a bad experience for us.

Very friendly and helpful staff.
We loved everything about our stay. The staff is great! The only complaint would be that the rooms seemed to have a musty scent.
