Ok stay, but I’d stay somewhere else next time...

The hotel was beautiful and the service was great, but the food was terrible and every meal offered almost the exact same buffet for all three meals, the entire week we were there. Also, the "all inclusive drinks" include one type of beer (very similar to miller high life) and one brand of liquor for all of their liquors. "Disco" from Spain is what it’s called and it is pretty gross. The most important reason I wouldn’t go back there was because the beach at the hotel is very hostile during high tide. It is definitely not "family friendly" and three separate currents collide there, making the waters very dangerous to swim in. The flags outside the hotel warn that the waters are "unstable" and warn you against going in. Even when the tide is out, it comes in at an alarming rate and can and will catch you off-guard. Basically everyone who stays there swims in the giant pool on the property, but I didn’t travel all the way to Costa Rica to stay at a pool, so I wasn’t happy about that. If I could go back and do it again, I would stay at a smaller place in the city part of Tamarindo because the town is a lot of fun and has a lot of cheap places to eat, and is next to the calmest and safest beach in Tamarindo.

Everywhere I went accepted US dollars, so don’t waste your time exchanging for colones. They rip you off, even at the hotel for the exchange rate.

Impressed...

The hotel was an all inclusive hotel. We usually think that the food will be just ok. We were wrong. The food was very good, with a wide variety of choices. The room was very clean and we had no trouble sleeping as well. The bed was comfortable. The hotel is right on the beach and they do a great job maintaining the hotel grounds. We would definately return!

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

Do not book your outside activities until you get to Costa Rica. They cost less and we had to pay twice for theactivities because we couldn’t get a hold of anyone to set up our activities. We ended up wasting a day waiting for someone to call us to schedule our fun.

Nice Resort, good location

My husband and I stayed at the Barcelo for 10 days. The hotel is out of the way but close enought to take a quick taxi to Tamarindo. The ground were beautiful and the rooms were very clean. Breakfast and dinners were good, lunch was so, so. The a la carte restraunt at the hotel was incredible. The beach at the resort was nice but to get to the nicer beaches you need to cross a small river way but it is worth it. Be careful as the tide comes in quickly.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Try to get to Lola’s it’s a restraunt about six miles from the Barcelo. It’s on the beach and it’s mascot is it’s pig name Lola. Very cool atmosphere. There are alot of tours you can sign up to do with the hotel. Also taxi’s to Tamarindo are cheap. Be sure to look into the Tamarindo shuttle which is right down the street from the hotel, there rates are great.
