"Very good hotel, wonderful city"
Lots of character, wonderful grounds, very peaceful and very friendly staff. Couple of minor points, service after dinner in the lounge was mixed - good on 2 nights but really poor on the other, took over half an hour to get a drink. And while the food is technically executed brilliantly, the balance of the dishes is a bit off. My main was far too rich (i would challenge anyone to have room for dessert afterwards) and my partners main was very salty (and she loves her salt). Lastly, the spa is a little bit tired. However, overall it was a very good stay and York is a wonderful city. A great place to enjoy for itself or for exploring York.

"Hotel with plenty of parking"
Found it okay. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. Beds always made and towels replaced every day. Feel that furniture was a little tired. Due to arthritis in knees found it difficult to use over the bath shower. Apparently the hotel only has 2 rooms with separate standing showers. The setting is lovely and we would go back!

"One night not long enough!"
I had escaped to the Lamb and Lion from another nearby "Fawlty Towers" B&B for the last night of my recent stay in York. I wish I'd chosen this one from the outset! Friendly, helpful staff and a lovely, tidy, cozy room. Deliciously scented shampoo and soap. Great location practically on Yorkminster's doorstep, and I could have touched the city walls from my window (but I didn't). Not the usual boring brekkie: instead, a yummy menu of interesting choices. The pub is full of little nooks and dining areas, and the lunch and evening menu looked delightful. I tried to eat supper there that night, but the place was booked up! Note to future guests: book for meals to avoid disappointment.

"Christmas shopping in York"
the Hotel was in an awesome spot. staff were excellent, and the view from the room was outstanding. the room was very large and I had the best nights sleep in ages. When I had phoned up (after reading of another review) I was alarmed that even though we had booked a room, we weren't guaranteed a table that evening in the restaurant, the hotel staff however were very obliging and rectified this for us. the evening meal was exceptional, we had the steak pie. There were a few issues about our stay that I need to mention. Two of the three windows didn't open, the shower hose was leaking and in the morning the shower was cold. The TV remote was broken as was one of the lights in the room. None of these really impacted on our stay but I do question whether in a 4 star Inn these should be addressed. the only disappointment was the breakfast, portion size was small, with only 1/2 a piece of over cooked black pudding each, 1 sausage and 1 piece of bacon and a solid fried egg,

"Welcoming hotel with friendly staff & relaxing spa"
We stayed for dinner bed and breakfast and then visited the spa and had some treatments. The little town of Helmsley is delightful with plenty of shops, cafes and attractions to visit. We received a free upgrade on booking into the hotel which was rather unexpected but very nice. Following pre dinner drinks and then our dinner we retired to our room which had a real fire and it s own long area it was so relaxing. Breakfast was very nice and our morning at the spa was lovely way to finish our short stay. I will certainly be coming back again

Pocket Guide: North Yorkshire York 4 stars Hotels

Once enclosed by ancient fortified walls, York offers a wealth of cultural and historical sites, including York Castle, the National Railway Museum, and York Minster, a Gothic cathedral in the city center. The Shambles is a pedestrian-friendly street dating back to mediaeval ages, where it housed butcher shops. Today the scene is less gruesome, with quaint boutiques and tea rooms lining the road.
