Very Disappointing

Posted Jul 5, 2017
I was really looking forward to my stay at the House of MG; but I have to say this has been a very disappointing experience. 1. Due to maintenance issues I've stayed in 4 different rooms; 2 had wooden slats across the windows so you could not see out and there was no natural light. Another had tiny windows so again, very dark. 2. Wardrobes are very small with no room to hang longer items such as dresses. 3. Food is mediocre. Toast is described as being made with 'artisinal' bread when in fact it's the cheapest bread you can buy. 4. Hotel is undergoing maintenance so there were workmen outside my room from 8am, leaving debris on the floor and generally making lits of noise. 5. Some rooms have adjoining doors which have no soundproofing because they are 'heritage' so you can hear everything in the next room (and I mean everything!!). 6. Wifi codes are changed on a daily basis so you are forever calling reception for the new code. After the first couple of days this is really irritating, and pointless. 7. After initial check-in staff at reception are not very welcoming. 8. Rooms are not overly clean, cobwebs and dust bunnies and if you have bare feet they will soon be dirty. 9. Cheap toiletries in the bathroom, not what I would expect in a 'boutique heritage' hotel. Could be an OK stay if you are only here for a couple of nights, I was here for 2 weeks and really wished I'd booked the Hyatt Regency instead.

The House of MG is lovely. It's an old heritage property with contemporary comforts. We stayed in a standard room which was in fact really spacious with four poster beds. The swimming pool which looked exotic was unfortunately under maintenance while we were there. The hotel is a short walk away from all the interesting sights in the old city: gates, tombs, mosques, temples, and havelis. Ask for a room located away from the front of the hotel to avoid the faint traffic noises you'll hear in your room. The hotel does helpfully provide ear plugs. The only blip in our stay was that we found a cockroach running around the plates we were eating on - not once but twice (dinner & breakfast). This was in the air conditioned section of the restaurant. I also saw roaches in the corridors and I suspect there might a pest problem.

An oasis at the border of the old city

If you prefer a historic atmosphere with spacious rooms that breathe colonial era charm to another blunt business hotel, you're right here. The house is just wonderful with it's patio gardens and lovely sitting areas. Staff is friendly and professional, the breakfast at the green house is good, and the rooftop restaurant is said to provide one of the best vegetarian dining experiences of original gujarati food in town. Situated on a bustling street at the entrance to the old town, it is only 10min by cab away from the new city center. The traffic noise fades to a mere background humming while you're sitting in front of your room in the gardened patios, and you rather wake up by the cheeping of birds than cars honking.

nice Haveli style hotel in downtown Ahmedabad

Posted Mar 4, 2017
Pros: Location
Cons: Evrything
Location: Near virtually all heritage sites of Ahmedabad
Our stay started out badly because they tried to put us up in a so-called "annex" of the hotel far from the the house of MG itself since they claimed that they were full- even though we had valid booking and had prepaid for 3 nights. This "annex"was in the middle of a dirty slum! Getting in and out of this place would have been a nightmare. This place is certainly NOT mentioned on their website After insisting to them that we will not accept this accommodation and wanted to be taken elsewhere instead they suddenly found 3 empty rooms in the main house of MG complex for us. These rooms were acceptable and equivalent to 3 star hotel accommodation However the place is very noisy owing to functions going on at all hours in businesses and a school nearby and there is a lot of pollution from heavy traffic. We will not stay here again!

Better than home

House of MG was my absolutely most favorite place to stay while traveling around India. The hotel grounds were gorgeous! I often told my friends that if I wanted to transport my room back home to always stay there. The details are beautiful, floors, pillows, benches, bathroom. The staff is fantastic and very attentive. Plus the food is fantastic! Extremely healthy :).
