Old hotel and low sense of respect

As a guy who visited egypt the first time to meet old friends from college abroad and see the tourist sites, i was excited.
Spent several days in Cairo at a 3-5 hotel hapilly without any fuss and chosen to stay at this hotel in alexandria because it is 'relatively' closer to the historical sites. I didnt mind spending money for a good accomodation.
The check in and out at this hotel took forever & the male staffs at the reception was not friendly (not even a smile).
Because its already a bit late about 10pm, me and my local friend decided to hv our food for take away and just eat in my room at the hotel while watching tv and catch up with each other.
Just right after i show off the antique room and the sea view at the veranda to my friend, my room phone rang. The reception says no outside visitors are allowed. I told him ok, pls let us finish dinner at least in the room because he is not going to stay over at the hotel anyway. The reception sounded willing but to my surprise sent the bellboy to escort my friend out like a criminal.
We try to reason calmly and they insist we have dinner in the public dining room. We were told its Egypt's law and were threaten to call the tourism police.
I do not know about this law, i respect it but do we hv to be too serious about it? i feel humiliated and guilty for my friend (who is egyptian) to experience this unnecessarily.
We lost our appetite and my friend just went back home.
The hotel lacks sense of humanity and respect.
