Hidden Treasure

Posted Jun 10, 2016
Cons: We loved it just the way it is.
Location: Canandelo is close to Amarante, a lovely little city west of the Douro Valley, where we enjoyed port wine tasting at the Panascal vineyard.
This lovely hideaway was an unexpected treat after our time in the Douro Valley. Our hostess made my husband and I feel like family. We loved hearing about the history of how her grandfather had farmed this area. We stayed for two nights in this beautifully renovated old farmhouse in a tiny old village off the beaten track for those traveling by car near Amarante, where fresh bread and milk are still delivered to her door each morning.

Village Stay

Posted May 12, 2016 on Hotels
Don't come here if you want a night club, restaurants, bars etc because there isn't any. But what there is includes a quiet village, close to the mountains and a fantastic host who is very keen to make sure you enjoy your stay and is genuinely interested and very friendly.

Well worth the drive

We can't say enough good things about our stay. Gloria is a charming host who went out of her way to make sure we were comfortable. Her home is a great base for hiking or walking through the area and the views out of every window are spectacular. (Make sure you follow her directions, the road is paved and clearly marked but relying on Google Maps could get you lost.)

Warm and Tranquil Luxury Rustic Place to Unwind

Posted Feb 28, 2016 on Hotels
It was a pleasure staying at Casa da Nogueira. We were welcomed as if we were a part of the family and had an extremely relaxing stay. The owner was exceptionally kind and continuously surprised us with ever greater comforts; such as, a wood fireplace, delicious hot food to compensate for the rainy and cold weather we encountered, and some great conversation.

Set in a lovely mountain village. Gloria, the owner, was tremendously charming and treated us like family. The house is quite historic and a mix of rustic and refined. A bit hard to find, but well worth the effort.

A great adventure

Beautiful house in a very small and friendly village 30 minutes on a narrow winding road from Amarante. Stop in Amarante for a nice visit to its church and ministers and have a nice meal at one of the good restaurants along the river before driving to the house. The house is large, rooms complete and bathrooms as up to date as any good hotel. You will enjoy the architectu craftsmanship of the house and it's beautifi location.

splendid off the beaten track experience

Remote village, lovingly restored old stone house where owner was born. Worth the effort to get there but not for the faint of heart. Beautiful, authentic village experience a bit far from stores or restaurants. Owner can feed you in a pinch but best to have a big lunch in town before arriving & bring along some supplies for simple cold dinner. Great breakfast included. Unique experience. We loved it. Drive carefully & be sure to follow directions on departure. We got lost in the woods for a while.

A very pleasant stay

A sneak peak into the local life in a 200 year old house. The owner was really nice and accommodating. We truly felt like very welcomed guests of hers. The house was a bit of on a beaten path and not touristy at all. The closest town is Amarante where you can find restaurants and shops.

Lovely family run guesthouse!!

Posted Sep 10, 2012 on Hotels
Take quite a crazy trip down windy roads (use google maps) to find a lovely family run guest house. Being around 7miles from Amarente this is for those searching a more personal getaway. Awesome view from window and a lovely room at an excellent price. We were very well looked after and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
