Beautiful, Central and incredibly polite staff

Pros: It was filled with extremely polite staff, secure and safe. Right by the river and bang on in the centre of amsterdam.
Cons: Maybe make the check in time a bit earlier but even that is ok since we were given free drinks.
Location: The location is right in the centre and literally the backyard of the hotel is a square of restaurants, coffee shops, fast food and supermarket.
We arrived in our hotel earlier than check in time and the extremely polite staff and concierge took our luggage for us while we explored the town. We arrived earlier than it was ready and was given 4 free drinks at the bar while we waited for our room and it was completely worth it. The room was in perfect condition with a beautiful view, it was me and my girlfriends anniversary and we were left a note in the room congratulating us. The staff were all ever so polite and helpful. The hotel was extremely safe as you needed your room key to get in past 9pm and to get up the stairs or lift. It is very central within a 10-15 minute walk to the red light district, heineken museum and about 20 minutes to amsterdam central station. Perfect and cheap, wonderful stay.

Very convinient for visiting most areas

Stayed for 3 nights in an executive room on the 4th floor overlooking the Amstel. Room was nicely fitted out and the bed (twins pushed together) was comfortable. The bathroom was smaller than expected but clean and functional. Staff always seemed freindly. We did not use the breakfast or dining facilties so cannot comment on these.

Excellent location

Hotels locationnis excellent. The hotel is still being done up I'm guessing. Room was nice dated decore but staff were excellent and very helpful. Bed comfy and bathroom lovely. Could have used iron in room. For the price I paid and location the hotel is worth visiting

Going downhill fast

Pros: Not much - location was fine.
Stayed here 2 years ago with lovely standard room - street view; now we were stuck in a room with a view of the wall; not enough room to hardly turn around - bed up against wall; bathroom so small the toilet almost touched sink. Asked for the view room & was advised it would be another 30 euro. Already paying too much with no breakfast - that was also another 30 euro.

1st timers in Amsterdam... when are we going back!

The Hampshire Hotel – Eden is located in a great area of town. Quiet enough at night so you can get some sleep, but close enough to move around town easily. Our specific room did not have a view, but I assume some rooms do, being right next to a canal. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. They offered a continental style breakfast, but it was not free. And besides, we wanted to experience as much of the city as possible, so we always ate out. My wife raved about how comfortable the bed was and I agreed. I was told they gave us a “larger” room and maybe they did, but if true, I’d hate to see the small rooms. It was adequate but in my American opinion wasn’t large. But it was clean, no weird smells and had a TV. One thing I did miss was a small frig. And my only gripe was the city tax that I was unaware of having to pay on top of what I thought was my final bill. Ended up being only about $30, but was still unexpected. Those two small irritants aside, I was pleased.

Terrible experience while check in

We had requested for an early check in while booking. We reached hotel at around 9.30 am and requested check in by 12.00 noon instead of 3.00 pm. We found that there was no rush in the hotel but still we were denied early check in which made us miss a visit to Madurodam. We were asked to pay Euro 418.87 being both the days' room charges which was no issue with us. I gave my FOREX card loaded only with Euros and told specifically that it contains Euros and please charge in Euros. Still the amount was apparently charged is USD after converting at an arbitrary bad exchange rate and my bank debited me in Euros after reconverting it at that day's rate from USD to Euro. In the process I lost Euro 32.08 due to unnecessary double conersion. The check in staff then asked me to sign authorisation to debit Euro 418.87 which had a small print foot note that I am agreeable to pay in a currency other than Euro. Being too tired after a night long flight I did not notice the foot note and signed after checking the amount of Euro 418.87. Later on when I got my bank's message of haing debited an amount that was higher by Euro 32.08, I inquired with the check in staff and thereafter with their manager as to why i was charged in USD and all I got was wishy-washy answers. I demand that hotel refunds me this amount of Euro 32.08.
