I knew I was booking a "lower end" room in this hotel, but I certainly did not expect what I received based on the price I paid. First let me start with the positives- the location is excellent, staff helpful & friendly, room was clean, bed was comfortable enough. The hotel is located in a very old building, so I will give some grace for that. Thankfully there is a small lift because the stairways are so narrow & steep, it is dangerous & many would not be able to climb them. Our room (basic, small room, which I knew when booking) was located on the 4th floor, very small, attic room with exposed beams and rafters & very low ceiling. The only furniture was a double bed & small child's chair. The safe attached to the wall doubled as the night stand & there was also a shelf suitable to place a purse or rucksack. The bathroom smelled terrible, best way to describe it is a septic smell coming from the shower drain. Thank goodness the windows opened (no screens) & we were able to let some fresh air in. There is also a fan, but no AC. I cannot imagine how stifling hot this room would be in summertime. Also, in the event of a fire or emergency, the floorplan is so confusing, finding & navigating the stairs would be difficult. We didn't complain to staff, we were there just 1 night & it was prepaid. We are experienced travellers& don't usually complain. The city was very busy, so finding something reasonably priced would be impossible.I do not recommend this hotel. Stay away.

Dear Michelle, thank you for taking the time to write a review about your stay in one of our 1 star rooms. Our 1 star rooms are our most basic rooms, but they have everything you need during a city trip; good location, friendly staff, clean room and a comfortable bed. We can understand that a septic smell from the bathroom is not what you expect in a hotel. Our technical staff is always there to fix problems, so it would have been better if you had informed the staff about this problem. We hope that we will see you again in one of our bigger rooms. Kind regards, Hotel The Exchange Team
