A common, but great view of downtown Anchorage, Alaska Rime Ice on windshield climbing out of Anchorage, Alaska at dawn. Moose calf feeding in the dusk sky at the Ted Stevens international airport First glimpse of Anchorage, AK.
#goldenhour My first morning in Alaska and I encountered this moose in the area between Earthquake Park and the airport. It waded into the water and started drinking. It made for a good photo opportunity. Our sun is setting at 1543. Have to take advantage of every ounce of the great Alaska outdoors.. Fall on Westchester Lagoon Floats on Lake Hood. On the way to Anchorage Airport.
#snow The busiest float plane seaport in America.. A walk in the rain can lead you to many wonderful sights. It was that crazy time of my life some 10 years ago where I ventured to Antarctica and then took a step further by venturing to the Arctic Circle in the north in the middle of winter!
The path I took from the south passed through Anchorage and Fairbanks by plane and then further by car to Coldfoot where in -40deg C/F I was out there alone catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights!
This is where I see the most #snow in my life, other than when I was living in Toronto! Lake Hood is the busiest seaplane base in the world! Eat at the restaurant in The LakeFront hotel (used to be the Millennium) and watch the planes come and go.
More on www.ajauntwithjoy.com Popped into this sizeable shop to pick up some gifts. Was quite impressed with it, seemed to have a good selection of reasonably priced bits and bobs It also claims to have one of the biggest chocolate waterfalls. The very beautiful and dangerous mud flats of Cook Inlet Moose and her calf, TSIA Apparently the busiest seaplane base in the world ... pretty quiet the day I was there though Taken from the Eielson Visitor Centre on a perfect day. That's Mt McKinley, North America's highest peak.#Alaska You can get a great view of downtown Anchorage from Earthquake Park.
Leaving Alaska. The 1964 Alaskan earthquake, also known as the Great Alaskan earthquake and Good Friday earthquake, occurred at 5:36 PM AST on Good Friday, March 27. Across south-central Alaska, ground fissures, collapsing structures, and tsunamis resulting from the earthquake caused about 139 deaths.
Lasting four minutes and thirty-eight seconds, the magnitude 9.2 megathrust earthquake was the most powerful recorded in North American history, and the second most powerful recorded in world history. Soil liquefaction, fissures, landslides, and other ground failures caused major structural damage in several communities and much damage to property. Anchorage sustained great destruction or damage to many inadequately earthquake engineered houses, buildings, and infrastructure (paved streets, sidewalks, water and sewer mains, electrical systems, and other man-made equipment), particularly in the several landslide zones along Knik Arm. Two hundred miles southwest, some areas near Kodiak were permanently raised by 30 feet (9.1 m). Southeast of Anchorage, areas around the head of Turnagain Arm near Girdwood and Portage dropped as much as 8 feet (2.4 m), requiring reconstruction and fill to raise the Seward Highway above the new high tide mark.
The park represents part of the remnants of a landslide caused by that earthquake. Night view of downtown Anchorage from Point Woronzof
