#goldenhour My first morning in Alaska and I encountered this moose in the area between Earthquake Park and the airport. It waded into the water and started drinking. It made for a good photo opportunity. #BarLove Darwin's theory is a great hole-in-the-wall bar in the middle of downtown Anchorage Alaska. Always something crazy going on there! #waterlust The busiest float plane seaport in America.. From the 17th floor of the Hotel Captain Cook. A walk in the rain can lead you to many wonderful sights. Love oysters and love champagne and love both of them together! At this little gem of a bar, the fresh Alaskan oysters come in ten different styles, from naked to Mexicana and Mornay, paired with beautiful champagnes from around the world. #LifeAtExpedia Upstairs is a phenomenal wine shop full of charm and grape-y wonderment. With vast pickings all arranged in category's such as Conner's Bog dog park. Sunset at the Turnagain arm. You can come here to learn more about Captain Cook's Voyage (the park is named after his ship) or simply to enjoy the stunning views over the Cook Inlet and the Beautiful. Lake Hood Seaplane Base in Anchorage - the busiest and largest in the world. Super cool view, Alaska is awesome.. A dream come true On approach to Anchorage, AK The 1964 Alaskan earthquake, also known as the Great Alaskan earthquake and Good Friday earthquake, occurred at 5:36 PM AST on Good Friday, March 27. Across south-central Alaska, ground fissures, collapsing structures, and tsunamis resulting from the earthquake caused about 139 deaths.
Lasting four minutes and thirty-eight seconds, the magnitude 9.2 megathrust earthquake was the most powerful recorded in North American history, and the second most powerful recorded in world history. Soil liquefaction, fissures, landslides, and other ground failures caused major structural damage in several communities and much damage to property. Anchorage sustained great destruction or damage to many inadequately earthquake engineered houses, buildings, and infrastructure (paved streets, sidewalks, water and sewer mains, electrical systems, and other man-made equipment), particularly in the several landslide zones along Knik Arm. Two hundred miles southwest, some areas near Kodiak were permanently raised by 30 feet (9.1 m). Southeast of Anchorage, areas around the head of Turnagain Arm near Girdwood and Portage dropped as much as 8 feet (2.4 m), requiring reconstruction and fill to raise the Seward Highway above the new high tide mark.
The park represents part of the remnants of a landslide caused by that earthquake. Street vendor. Peanut butter pie... Yumm! A state champ and MVP. Kodiak Lady Bears go 27-0 Breakfast sandwich of Reindeer sausage. The Sandwich Deck is nothing fancy to look at, but the food's good and the price is right. Enjoying the Blues at a happening new place... Killjoy Thankful that a fellow participant at the RISING-SUN conference shared some seaweed with us this morning. I will try fermented whale at lunch. When in the traditional territories of original peoples, it's good to eat some of the food they offer you - it's respectful, and it shows your appreciation for that which nourished your guests for hundreds of thousands of years. For incredible panoramic views of the Chugach Mountains, Cook inlet and Anchorage just take the elevator to the top floor of this carpark. Best views in town and it's free. Yeah it's a bit touristy, but without a car it was a good way to get out of downtown. Takes you to Lake Hood and Earthquake Park and the guide was very informative. $20 for an hour and leaves from outside the Visitor Info Centre on 4th Ave.
