SorJuana Maldonado's Spectacular Convent

Posted Apr 19, 2016
Pros: The courtyard, beautiful rooftop terrace, the view from the terrace, the bed linens, comfortable rooms, uniqueness of the hotel.
Cons: bathroom was humid and shower could be cleaned better.
Location: All main ruins and attractions are near by.
We had a truly one of a kind experience at Hotel Sor Juana in Antigua, Guatemala. This absolutely beautiful and quaint hotel is centrally located and within walking distance to all attractions in Antigua. The hotel's decor is truly divine and antique with around 5-6 unique rooms all of which have unique and different pieces which make each individual room special. We picked the room with the double beds which is huge and has a little seating area to read books, 2 plush double beds with beautifully hand woven artisan high end linens blankets and pillows all of which come from La Casa de Algodon across the street. Upon arrival we were greeted by the night manager as he helped us with our luggage and showed us to our room, we loved all the little nooks this hotel has! The courtyard was so charming with balconies filled with planters and a rooftop terrace that has a view to die for! We had healthy breakfasts every single morning overlooking the water volcano, homegrown organic jellies straight from the garden and bread from an ancient bread shop in Antigua. Everything about this place was awesome including the personal details by Frida and the owner! We felt at home in this comfortable quaint hotel and would recommend as it's away from the hustle and bustle and close enough to walk to the main attractions.

Best hotel in Guatemala

Posted Mar 24, 2016 on Hotels
Everything was done to take excellent care of us. One in our group got food poisoning at a town restaurant and the manager called the pharmacy and had all the right medicine to speed recovery. Their concern and generosity was very much appreciated. We wish we could have stayed in the hotel because once inside the doors and off the street of this primitive town, we were so lucky to have found such a beautiful hotel.

Sor Juana, a real gem.

Posted Jan 26, 2016 on Hotels
My wife and are have lived, worked and traveled overseas for many years, and I can honestly say we have never stayed in a more wonderful hotel than Sor Juana. Actually, "hotel" doesn't really describe Sor Juana. Set in a beautifully renovated convent dating from colonial times, Sor Juana is a cultural gem with all the modern amenities. Julio, the manager and part owner, is also a gem, although he hasn't been around as long as the convent! He and his friendly, courteous staff provided for all our needs, including an absolutely delicious breakfast on the gorgeous hotel rooftop every morning. Julio is also a tremendous source of information about things to do and see, including invaluable tips regarding Antigua's latest and best restaurants and watering holes. He also made sure we had breakfasts-to-go ready for us when we left town at 5:30 a.m. to catch our flight back to the States! To be sure, we can't speak highly enough of Hotel Sor Juana and Julio.

The very best!

We felt quite at home, the staff incredibly polite, and willing to plase. Sor Juana is a five room boutique hotel, rooms are ample, and comfortable. Dining is at the terrace, a staff of two were were waiting for us with the table nicely set. As a matter of fact we were the only guests at the terrace, wich has a very nice view, you can eve see Volcan de Agua.

Small hotel but great staff and owner.

Pros: It is very quaint and picturesque in a good way. Pretty flowers and views to look at from the patio and courtyards.
Cons: I would like ceiling fans and screens on windows and maybe doors if possible. We did have a mosquito that visited us often.
Location: Antigua is a very old city with many ruins of churches. Lots of things to see, good restaurants, and challenges buying from the street vendors.
Everyone strives to please. They were there for your every need. Breakfast, wake up calls, giving tips on restaurants and tours, even early breakfast in the room on tour days. They kept the place as clean and neat as possible. It has no A.C. but the weather is always cool, and the mosaic bathtub looked dirty, but I think that it was just the coloring of the mosaic.

Excellent service would stay again

Posted Sep 7, 2015
I would agree with a posting I read that said this is more like a b & b I never stayed in a b&b but I liked it. We had great service Julio was excellent and helpful and all of the staff was outstanding. I would stay at this hotel again but keep in mind a few things: rooms have no temperature control except opening your patio door - however security and privacy were so great never concerned ...even with a 10 year old and two young ladies ... You need to be buzzed into the building so no one is on the property unless they are staying and there is no way out except through the same front door. The bathroom had a window/door to the side of the shower this window needs to be frosted or curtains should be put here - when u get out of the shower the patio is right there so if someone your staying with is on your patio when u are showering they will see u naked. The only other downfall was the thin walls but the home was built in the 1500's. Excellent breakfast and amazing patio with views of mountains and if u go up on a clear night you can sit up on this quiet terrace and watch the mountain spew lava ...it's amazing to see and a must . My family will stay again and I can't say more how helpful and friendly the staff was - they made our stay wonderful and comfortable.

Beautiful, picturesque, timeless

The best hotel we have ever stayed at, and we have traveled a lot. The views from the rooftop terrace will be a highlight of your trip. This is where you will eat breakfast and enjoy the locally-sourced (safe to eat for foreigners) food. The manager is the son of Elizabeth Bell, a well-known Antigua historian, and he will point you to the local bars, sights, food, etc. We had a great time in Antigua thanks to his suggestions. Give him a call before you arrive and just have him book your tours and airport transfers. Everything will be safe and competitively priced.
