Here in Athens lies the Double Barrel Cannon. It was forged in 1862 as a Uga, NCAA, football, tilt-shift, tilt shift, sec, Clarke County, created by Act of Dec. 5, 1801 from Jackson County, originally contained Oconee and part of Madison and Greene Counties. It was named for Gen. Elijah Clarke who came to Wilkes County, Ga., from N.C. in 1774 and fought through Ga., and S.C. during the Revolutionary War. He engaged in several battles with the Indians and signed treaties with the Cherokees in 1783 and Creeks in 1783 and 1785. He died Dec. 15, 1799. First officers of Clarke County, commissioned Dec. 31, 1801, were: Abner Bankston, Sheriff; Bedford Brown, Clk, Sup. Ct.; Gabriel Hubert, Clk. Inf. Ct.; Stephen Nobles, Surveyor; Daniel Conner, Coroner. I'm sure it seemed like a good idea at the time, but it was short lived for obvious reasons. How can you fire both barrels at the same time? Built with funds appropriated in 1845. Athens City Hall was built to provide a market on the ground floor where meat was sold. The building also housed the calaboose (jail), and the hall itself was used not only for political meetings, but for theatrical performances by native talent and traveling barnstormers.
The ground floor is constructed of Lexington limestone and the upper floors are of brick with limestone accents. The building still houses the Mayors office.
Standing proudly outside the Classic Center - the city's convention center - and facing downtown Athens, the statue of Athena, Greek goddess of wisdom, symbolizes the community's namesake - Athens, Greece. Joseph Henry Lumpkin, born in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, Dec. 23, 1799, entered the University of Georgia at fifteen, completing his college education at Princeton, New Jersey, in 1819. Lumpkin passed the bar in 1820 and began practicing law in Lexington, Georgia. He served in the State Legislature, 1824 and 1825, and helped from the Georgia Penal Code, 1833.
When the Georgia Supreme Court was formed in 1845, the General Assembly elected Lumpkin, Hiram Warner, and Eugenius Nisbet to the bench. His colleagues chose Lumpkin Chief Justice, and he held that position until his death, June 4, 1867. When the University added a school of law, it was given Lumpkin's name, and he lectured there until the outbreak of the Civil War. The eloquent opinions of Georgia's first Chief Justice, who revered the spirit as well as the letter of the law, were of inestimable importance in firmly establishing the Supreme Court as part of the State's legal system, Lumpkin's beautiful Greek Revival home was built in 1842. After his death in 1867, the house was used by Madama Sophie Sosnowski as her General Robert Taylor (1787-1859), a planter and cotton merchant, built this Greek Revival home as a summer residence in 1839. Shortly thereafter he moved his family here permanently from Savannah in order for his sons to attend the University of Georgia. Henry Woodfin Grady (1850-1889) lived in this house from 1865 to 1868 while a student as the University. His father, William S. Grady, bought th house in 1863 and it remained in the family's possession until 1872. Henry Grady often referred to this house as Local craft brewery, tasting room. Eight beers on tap and a helpful staff to help find the right beer for you. Opens at 5:30, nice way to spend an afternoon. Georgia law prevents its brewers from running tasting rooms. Brewers get around this rule by offering tours. You pay for a tour and, in this case, you get a pint glass and 6 - six ounce 'tastes'. Once you've paid and entered the facility the tours become 'optional'!! Great craft burger joint. Also serve dogs, chicken sands, and a couple veggy sandwiches. They have beer on tap and outdoor setting.
