Great position with views of Auckland across the water. Amazing staff who made us feel right at home, we stayed 2 nights and ate in the restaurant the whole time as the food was wonderful.

Great location to explore Auckland

Posted Feb 27, 2017
Pros: Great walking location, very accessible to ferry service and bus lines which provide great connections. Very nice staff and great bar/restaurant.
Cons: Better electric in the rooms
Location: several shops and services in the immediate neighborhood .
Biggest drawback to this inviting place is the electric service in the rooms. It is extremely limited. There is no air conditioning, which is not really a problem most of the time in New Zealand, but if you get a back room there is no way to exhaust the cooking smell from the room because you can't get an outlet to put the fan in the window. The nearest one requires an extension cord and this requires unplugging something else in the room like the TV to operate. Turned out this was especially important on the weekends.

Great small hotel in perfect location

Posted Jan 3, 2017 on Wotif
Pros: Grand rooms. Great views. Great location. View from toilet!
Cons: Customer service when things do not go according to plan.
Location: Devonport Chocolates, ferries to Auckland city, Navel museum, drive up to North Head and take in the views.
We had did have a great experience staying in this small hotel. Great grand rooms with fantastic views, great dinner - staff on the dinner service were exceptional in coping with a group of diners. However we were very disappointed to be advised in the morning that our breakfast was 'not included' in our room cost - even though we knew that it was. The woman was not very welcoming at all and was in fact quite rude - 'we' needed to prove that it was included otherwise 'we' would be charged. Luckily we had a printed copy in our room but it was quite embarrassing to be sent to our room to 'prove the fact' and having to discuss this in front of other guests. Left a bit of a sour note on what was otherwise a great stay.

Many thanks for your feedback and apologies for the mix-up. The booking you made came through to the hotel stating 'brakfast not included'. The booking is normally without breakfast and so the hotel was surprised that your booking included breakfast. But indeed it had. This was a website mistake that we have now rectified so it wont happen again. So, thanks for your patience. You enabled us to improve our systems. all the best and I hope you come again.

Cool hotel in a terrific location

Posted Jan 1, 2017 on Lastminute
Pros: The ambiance of the hotel + views from the room were fantastic. The funky but classy street shops and gorgeous seaside walks are icing on this cake.
Cons: The bed mattress seemed tired and was not very comfortable. Breakfast was ordinary with bacon getting special mention and no condiments for the toast.

Many thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve. We usually offer a free a la carte cooked breakfast included in the room rate. So, I am surprised that you did not receive condiments with the toast, this should have been noticed immediately and rectified. But I hope you enjoyed the rest of the stay and that you visit us again.

Great one night stay. Ideally located in Devonport for shops, restaurants & ferry over to CBD if you're not looking for the bustle of the city for your entire stay. Will definitely return for longer ! Thank You!

A Devonport experience in a Devonport icon

Posted Nov 21, 2016 on Wotif
Cons: Some hand rails in the bathroom (for getting in and out of bath) will be useful (and minimise risk of people slipping when accessing the shower).
Location: Great location - park across the road, ferry across the road, shops, bars and eateries up the road and round the corner.
The Esplanade takes you back in time (but still with all the mod cons). Very pleasant staff - and lots of things to look at in the hotel in terms of Devonport's history. Andrew, the Manager, very nice bloke who will do anything to help make your stay a happy one. Restaurant food was delicious and well-priced. Bar had a good feel to it with lots of locals popping in - seemed to be a true 'local'. Excellent location. Stayed a few years ago - and again last week. The hotel is getting better and better.

Fine old building, near Devonport seafront

Posted Nov 21, 2016
Pros: Architecture, décor, location, room, staff
Location: In the centre of quaint Devonport village.
Great building, with a fine heritage and lovely, high ceilings. Lavishly appointed bath room and excellent breakfast and afternoon tea. Didn't try the restaurant although it looked very nice. Make sure you check that room has a sea view (if you want one), to avoid disappointment. It's only 1 minute walk to the Devonport Ferry Terminal for Auckland City and other destinations. If you're planning to spend time in Auckland; it is worth considering The Esplanade - it has an up-market price tag but by the time you've paid that and the return fare for the Ferry (c 15 mins each way); you'll probably still save on the eye-watering parking fees in Auckland.

The best thing about this hotel is is location.

Posted Nov 8, 2016 on Wotif
The hotel is in bad need of an overhaul. Wallpaper is literally falling off the walls, the plaster walls in our room were blistering/peeling. There was no AC so we slept with the window open, which made for a noisy night. There is a quaint look to the hotel but because of the semi-shabbiness of the place, it feels more run down than retro. The pillows were old, the king bed was two singles pushed together without a decent mattress topper to hide the seam. All of this would've been fine except that we paid $240 for one night, more than staying at a five star hotel in the CBD. As handy as the location was, I was disappointed with it.

Great, many thanks for your feedback, we really appreciate it, a sit helps us to improve. The hotel is over 110 years old and takes a lot of upkeep. We have a maintenance programme and take each room our of use o refresh. Some rooms are still in process .
