"Excellent location; great staff; problematic rooms"
We stayed at Vincci Baxia for four nights this spring. From a tourist's perspective, the hotel is ideally located. It is five minutes to the main square (Praca do Comercio) and the main shopping street radiating from this square. Most of the tram lines of interest to the tourists stop within 5-7 minutes of the hotel. Alfama is walking distance, and there are several good restaurants in the neighborhood. And, the front desk staff are absolutely wonderful...very helpful and accommodating...and ready to address any issue that is within their purview. They can recommend good restaurants - just let them know if you've head enough of the cod and octopus, no matter how good (two days straight of feasting on these delicacies and we were ready for a change), and they will factor that in as well - and make the reservations as well. And the hotel has free wifi.
As the room, ours was on the third floor (room 310), overlooking the street. We did not encounter the noise problems that many have mentioned. The outside temperature was sunny but cool, and we did not open the windows...or perhaps we are used to large cities and a bit of noise simply washed over us. And perhaps we were sufficiently far from the elevators that they did not bother us. All in all, noise was not an issue for us.
The room was reasonable-sized, especially in comparison to room we had in Amsterdam, for example, with lots of outdoor light streaming in, but poorly designed/organized. The bed is p

This was a real find! Pedro at the desk was friendly, spoke great English, and gave us lots of good tips. All the desk people felt like family after six nights. The fado night Thursday was excellent! The room had a comfortable bed, and everything worked! It was small, but we did get the cheapest room. We asked for an upper floor room and got it. We also loved the location and the rooftop terrace.
We only had two minor complaints. We were not thrilled with the breakfast; on the fourth day we found a cheaper, better one on Rua Augusta. And there was sometimes a weird smell that seemed to come from the toilet.
But these were minor issues; we would definitely come back!

So impressed with this hotel. Numerous extra touches, deep carpets, high ceilings, the epitome of gracious elegance. The staff are friendly and efficient and nothing is too much trouble, the rooms very comfortable. Breakfast is a real treat with freshly baked pastries, piles of fresh fruit, and a greater choice than I've encountered in any other hotel. This is a superbly run establishment and perfectly situated.

An elegant district in central Lisbon, Baixa welcomes visitors to stroll through broad squares to view the Pombalina 18th century architecture built to withstand earthquakes after one shattered the city in 1755. This downtown district is home to Lisbon’s city hall and Edward VII Park. Historical monuments and streets lined with shops and cafés encourage visitors to spend the day exploring Baixa.
