Marvelous building, average hotel.

Stayed for 1 night in December. First impressions were wonderful - beautiful foyer, conservatory, lots of space, plentiful sitting areas, open fires. Check-in was quick and ahead of time - we were 2 hours early but were warmly welcomed by a receptionist who also decided to give us a superior room instead of deluxe one, having found out it was my husband's birthday. We barely managed to finish our lunch by the open fire, when the room was ready. We were so impressed! After that it all went to pot- basin in the bathroom was blocked with food (?!), every cupboard door was making creaking noises, remote control wasn't working, cheap cracked lampshades that need replacing and bathroom tiles looked as if they needed a really good scrub. On the plus side the bed was very comfortable, the room and bathroom spacious and the place was warm. Supper in the Kells Bar took 2 hours as our order was lost in transit, but the staff were very apologetic and made up for it with complimentary drinks and dessert. Breakfast in the main restaurant was very good indeed, plenty of choice for cold and hot food; the restaurant itself was absolutely magnificent with all Christmas decorations and lights. We did take a walk around the golf course which is very nice and well maintained. Afternoon tea was slightly disappointing - some of the sandwiches were quite unappealing, and tea was served in metal pots with teabags, would not recommend.
