The best you can get at the price in Barcelona
Posted Jun 14, 2016
Barcelona is very expensive so I thought this was a great deal for a private room. It was clean and the hostel was lively, we met plenty of other travellers in the bar on my partners birthday. The other people can make it noisy but you should expect this in a hostel. Towels and soap are provided in the private rooms. In terms of the room, it was as a good as a budget hotel/B&B, apart form a lack of iron or hairdryer but I could deal with that.
The location may seem a long way away from the main sites but its only around 25 minute walk to the old city, it looks much further, and just round the corner from the Sagrada Familia. The public transport keeps the place well connected too and you can reach the beach in 10 mins on the metro.
Now for the downsides. Our room had a horrible smell in the bathroom which wouldn't go, even though the housekeeping people came to clean part way through the stay. Also the lighting in the room was awful, you needed the light on all the time because the small window looked onto a tiny courtyard and we were only on the 3rd of about 8 floors. No light came in at all, which was extremely disappointing given the price we paid for the room. The beds were also pretty uncomfortable but this could just be personal preference. Finally most of the staff are really grumpy. There was one helpful lady who happened to check us in and out but the others often spent more time talking to each other than helping and they didn't make me feel comfortable.
