extortionate prices .. read small print

Posted Sep 16, 2017
Pros: View from our balcony and seeing sunset. Using the hotel bikes to cycle along the bike route next to the beach.
Cons: Costs in hotel ie teas coffee and milk should be un limited and not cost extra. Toiletries like shampoo conditioner and body wash should be included.
Location: Location was good. Close to beach. Fantastic cycle route. You will need a car to find good restaurants
Hotel location good. Room sizes good but we booked king size room/ bed. The hotel and our room were clean although we did not use the spa, pool or gym area so cannot comment. The balcony to our room was covered in sea gull poop which was not nice and we asked 3x for it to be cleaned and it wasn't. Only 2 coffee packs were left each day and 2 milks. no tea unless you specifically asked at reception. If you wanted more it said on room tariff you had to pay extra. Bottled water in room was 5dollars. sweets and snacks in room or from fridge were extortionate prices! A beer at the bar was 9.5 dollars. On returning to hotel one evening there was a power cut it was pitch black. We were told there was no emergency lighting or torches so we had to go straight to bed as we could not see a thing. The staff did not see this as an issue. Parking at hotel was 27 dollars per day. On checking out we were charged 9 dollars per day for using the toiletries that were in shower. We have never had to do this in a 4 star rated hotel. One bonus was the use of the hotel bikes. They specify 2 hours only but we managed to use them most of the day on 3 days. Baleen restaurant on site was very hit and miss.. This hotel is much more suited for an overnight or wk end wedding venue. There were two weddings during our stay and the noise late at night was terrible and reception staff made no effort to stop guests shouting in corridor late at night. Would not choose to stay at this hotel again.

Well kept secret with only a few minor flaws

Posted Sep 7, 2017
Pros: Just about everything but the parking charge.
Cons: See above.
Although I had paid for the minibar charges on a separate cc, it was double billed on the cc for the room, and I had to call to get that charges reversed. The room I was in,316, there were stains on the chair cushions, coffee/soda? marks on the white headboard and the blackout curtain in the alcove didn't close properly. I did mention this to the front desk when I checked out. Front desk check in was very pleasant and accommodating when the restaurant forgot to include utensils for my takeout. Beds and pillows are fabulous. Bathrooms are always immaculate. Parking, however, is still way overpriced. Has been that way since I first stayed there back in the 90's. Could be a deal-breaker in today's economy. All in all a wonderful little find.

Best feature

Posted Aug 30, 2017
Pros: Options to use bikes at no extra fee.
Location: Location was great close to the beach and restaurants.
The ability to sign out bikes included in the fee was the best feature. The guys that helped us sign out the bikes were very friendly. Also, we arrived early. They let us use the bikes till the room was ready. And we were able to get into our room a few hrs ahead of time. Easy access to restaurants (walking distance).

Note worth it

Roommwas dirty. You have to literally live out of your suitcase, no drawers or counter space. Had to request some additional cleaning upon check in. You get one cup of coffee in your room, none available to purchase on the property. Rude front desk staff.

Great location! Great hotel!

Posted Aug 8, 2017
Pros: Friendly staff. Great location. Very clean. We loved the Jacuzzi because the wind there is pretty chilly.
Cons: Bring ear plugs. Not just because of the sea lions outside, but the rooms are not sound proofed. Lots of noise from the halls and patio area.
Location: Fishing, paddle boats, paddle boards, glass bottom boat rides, good food and beautiful scenery. We didn't do the Seaside Lagoon but it looked fun.
This was my first visit to the Portofino in Redondo Beach. I wanted something near the marina so that we would have lots of exciting things to do. Nothing about our weekend stay disappointed! The Portofino is not a cheap place to stay. But you pay for the location of being right on the water (marina and harbor, not ocean front) and for the conveniences. The parking is really expensive, in my opinion, and we didn't even bother with the restaurant Baleen because of the price (we were a party of 4, including teenagers). We found cheaper places to eat in Hermosa or a quick drive to your favorite fast food spot. Olympus Paddle Boards was the cheapest place to rent stand up paddle boards and they meet you really close to the hotel. Sport fishing is also right out of the marina near the hotel and we took the Redondo Special. Lots of fish caught and lots of fun. Free bike rentals make getting around so much fun.

Nice, but not a resort

Posted Aug 6, 2017
Pros: The location for our purposes of touring north, south, and east of LA couldn't have been better. The free bikes (2 hrs or less) were great!
Cons: Parking could be free. The hotel is expensive, so charging $27/day for parking seemed pretty silly. The $11/day "facility" fee seemed unnecessary.
Location: The location is not on a beach, but behind a protective seawall which serves as a quiet harbor for the adjacent marina where seals & dolphin played.
While we found the Portofino to be in the perfect location for our 5 day stay focused on touring north, south, and east of LA, the only thing I would note as Impressive is the location. The double-bed, ocean view room was between small and cramped for the 3 of us. There was no place to recycle plastics, glass, paper, etc. I found that quite surprising for a California business. The phone didn't work so we called the front desk when needed with our cell phones. The cleaning staff, while good, had a disposition to forget to restock our coffee cups and wine glasses, so we called the front desk frequently to have them returned. The free bikes were a great way to get up to Hermosa Beach - a beautiful sandy beach - less than a mile from the hotel's door step. Redondo Beach shops, fish markets, and pier were just a 15-minute walk south. I found the $38/day parking & "facilities" fee a bit extreme, even for southern California. The pool wasn't much larger than a spa and couldn't logically be called a "swimming" pool.

Portofino Hotel

Posted Jul 26, 2017
Pros: setting
Cons: service is lackluster although friendly.
Location: it's at the beach, that says it all.
Beautiful location, but the location and the experience do not quite match up. Hopefully they will improve in the future.
