Mercure Hotel in Beijing

We were greeted by the people in the front desk who did not speak much english. That did not bother me as much as their insistence that I needed a visa to enter China. This was absurd because I had already been to Shanghai before arriving in Beijing. The front desk was completely flabbergasted and confused that my country does not require a visa for entering China. To this day I am wildly confused why my Visa status is of any concern to the hotel. When we were asking to speak with the manager, they kept saying he was in a meeting...which was a lie. Instead of the front desk asking me to wait while they call the embassy or check the official website, I was told they were going to call the police. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt and say that things got lost in translation, that they were not going to call the actual police. That said, it does not take away the fact that this was my first impression of the hotel and its staff. After this debacle, we were given our room key but we were not informed about wifi passwords, meal times, meal locations, fitness center availability, or any other basic information you give your guests. It was disappointing, but the front desk's lack of friendliness stood out to me the most.
