A hotel in the countryside near Reading

Posted May 31, 2017
Pros: The location.
Cons: Just about everything.
Location: A 10 to 20 minute drive from local pubs and shopping centres.
The photographs in Expedia do not show that one wing of the hotel has burnt down. The remainder looks as if no one is interested in doing maintenance. There was no telephone in the room, and the TV did not have Freeview channels, let alone cable. The elevator was broken and there was no evidence that anyone was trying to fix it. This hotel had been part of the Copthorne Group and was in a lovely location, but it would appear that the new owners are not willing to spend money maintaining the buildings, or rebuiding the damaged wing. We had a minor issue when the hotel charged us for a breakfast charge when we had "breakfast included". The receptionist said she would check with the owners and let us know by email. That never happened.

A good idea gone bad

Posted May 28, 2017
Pros: The foreign immigrant staff were a credit to themselves.
Cons: Somebody take the place by the scruff and reinvigorate what remains instead of allowing the place to be defined by what's destroyed.
Location: There is nothing to do nearby, it's remote, so when you ask what time the bar opens at 3pm and get told 6pm be prepared for disappointment.
From the moment we arrived to see half the building as a fire swept derelict doubts began to set in that the photos in the internet were misleading to say the least. On entry to the reception which was tucked away apologetically in the far corner of the car park we weren't at all greeted by the two individuals behind the reception desk who couldn't have expressed any more obvious disappointment to see us. Thankfully these two English representatives of the Reading Lake Hotel set the bar so low that the great effort shown by the immigrant staff in the restaurant and bar shone even brighter than their efforts were due. We couldn't fault them at all and I extend our appreciation also to the chef who made a real effort with the two main meals we ordered which judging from the emptiness of the place was probably the only work that came his way that evening. Such a shame as the location is superb but the term neglected understates the building although again the cleaning staff should be congratulated for keeping such an 80's time warp bedroom in the clean and hygienic state that they do. Clearly this place suffered terribly with the wing destroyed by fire in November 2015, but that's almost two years ago and the overall impression as the title of my review suggests is of a good idea gone very bad indeed.

Has potential

Posted May 21, 2017
Hotel staff was nice and friendly. Bathroom was dated but room was clean. Comfy beds and nice sized room. Also, it was nice that they had a mini fridge. It looks like there was a fire on one wing so the hotel doesn't look exactly like the picture. It is right off the water and has great potential.

Lovely location

The room was spacious, but very tired looking. The shower didn't work properly, coming out in one stream of water. There was a puddle in the bathroom, think there was a leak under the sink. Having said that, it was the quietest hotel I think I ever stayed at, not woken at all during the night by noisy other guests. The location is lovely, if a bit out of town. Very good breakfast!

nice and quiet

If, like me, you like a nice, quite break far from the maddening crowds, this is the place for you. The hotel is located on a lake and every room has a balcony, so if you've got kids, don't forget to pack some bread, as the kids will love feeding the ducks and swans. Yes, it might be a bit outdated as other reviewers suggest, it does not have a large tv and hundreds of TV channels, but who wants to watch TV when on a break, anyway? The roof on one half of the hotel is still not repaired after the fire so it might spoil the view a little
