I arrived late and left early and so the unmanned reception worked for me, with an emailed entry door code and envelope with the key left in the safe in the hall. The apartments are described as 'luxury' but they are not, or at least, the studio apartment that I had, was not luxurious. The mattress and duvet were thin and hard, there was no lighting near the desk or the bed, and the 'desk' was unusable (small, peeling plastic veneer and with the TV and DVD player and digibox on top - and not easily moved). The bathroom also lacked style; the rather cheap building work and fixtures and fittings reminded me of student digs! The slatted blind on the window did not keep out the light of the giant advertising panel on the side of the newly opened Birmingham New Street Station but the secondary-glazing was effective at keeping out the noise. The kitchen, in contrast, was very well equipped and well-finished. It was fine for an overnight stay, especially as I arrived late and left early, but it was not the luxurious apartment that the advertising led me to expect and I would have struggled to stay in a room with so little lighting (beyond that coming through the window!) for more than a day.
