Absolutely worth an early morning to watch the sun rise over Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island - #beach the entire time I was there I was clouded out of a sunset, So knowing that I wasn't going to get the sunset I went to see what high tide looks like on the island. It was brutal.
During high tide the entire beach disappears and water crashes up onto the sand dunes and barrier rocks. I captured this about 45 minutes after sunset. the color comes from the city lights just behind the buildings.
Image is about 1 minute long. I had to hold the tripod down when a wave would come in, always fun. Driving through the tree tunnel on Clam Creek Road takes you to the #fishing pier. A beautiful spot for a #sunset photo on the northern tip of Jekyll Island.
#beach #island #statepark #goldenhour I'm at St Simons Island for a couple days. I came across these birds, no idea what kind they are. Sunrise on Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island. Captured at high tide when the oceans covers up the beach and tries to get over the sand dunes. The beach on the north end of Jekyll Island is known as Driftwood Beach, due to all of the remnants of trees that died when the beach eroded. It resembles something of a tree graveyard. It's a wide, open beach and great for a long beach walk. It's also a popular spot for weddings.

Driftwood Beach The Horton House Historic Site on Jekyll Island, GA. The house was originally built it 1740 by Major William Horton, who settled on Jekyll Island as 2nd in command to General James Oglethorpe as part of their expansion of English settlements. The house was made of tabby, a material created by burned oyster shells, sand, and water. The original house was burned during a Spanish raid in 1742. The home was rebuilt after the American Revolution, and used as a home by Poulain de Bignon who lived there until his death. In 1886 the island transitioned from an active plantation to a recreational area, and the home eventually fell into disrepair. It is free to visit. #jekyllisland #georgia Looking up the marsh as sun sets. The oldest standing church building on St Simon Island, Georgia. It was built in 1880 to serve the workers at the lumber mills located on the former Hamilton Plantation property. Beach on North East side of jekyll island GA. Driftwood beach is a piece of artwork. Completed in 1872 this is one of only five surviving light towers in Georgia. The St. Simons Lighthouse is one of only five surviving light towers in Georgia. An operational navigation aid for traffic entering St. Simons Sound, it casts its light as far as 23 miles out to sea. Unlike many other operational lighthouses, the St. Simons Lighthouse invites visitors to climb the 129 steps to experience views of neighboring Jekyll Island, the mainland (Brunswick), and the south end of St. Simons Island. It was built in 1872 and first automated in 1954. The museum on the grounds is quite informative. Driftwood Beach Adorable costal town!! Worth a trip for a weekend get away 🎣🍷❤️ How can something destructive like the slow erosion of giant trees from highland to the coast be actually so scenic. Well you just need a point of view. The Avenue of Oaks. Planted in 1826 to provide an entrance to what was than a prosperous cotton plantation known as Retreat Plantation they now line the entrance road to a private community and golf course. Very cool Big tree! One of two remaining slave cabins on what was the Hamilton Plantation. Since 1931 they have been used by the local garden club. The beach at Jekyll island Very cool to see something built in the 1700's A great spot to visit at sunset. The tree spirits of St. Simons Island are many many weathered faces carved in the oak trees of the island. A result of artist Keith Jennings leaving his mark on the island, the carvings depict the spirit of the sailors who lost their lives at sea while sailing on ships made from St. Simons Oak. This one depicted in the picture is one of the recent artworks, just next to the visitors center. When in St. Simons, looking for the tree spirits that are publicly accessible (many are on private property) is a fun past time. #TakeAHike Takes a little bit of a walk to get here, but driftwood beach is not to be missed.
