Don't book a room if there is a wedding function!

Pros: The proximity to the high street and the bathroom accessories
Cons: Hospitality of the staff, not over-pricing a room that is not fit to house guests when there is a wedding on!
Location: 5 mins walk from the high street with a few restaurants nearby
No one at reception when we got there and had to notify a barman to get someone to check us in. Room was pleasant though- quite large with lovely Molton Brown bathroom accessories. We were told when checking in that a wedding will be on so we will be able to hear some music - which wasn't too much of a big deal- until it started. It was so loud, the floor was vibrating and I could hear people singing along to songs, it was like i was in the room next door to the hall. I was stunned as to why we were even given this room (and why the guests at that wedding weren't given it). This lasted till 12.30am. I called asking to move rooms but they were full, which is fine but the next morning when I spoke to the manager, he was very rude. I also told him about our breakfast, which was burnt and he just started laughing. So disappointed in his rude manner and the whole experience of staying there. Such a waste of money. The only saving grace was that they gave me SOME money back on the room rate (a minimal amount), but even then, I felt totally ripped off - the hotel isn't even that nice to warrant such a high price. Will never ever be going back there again as it ruined our weekend getaway.

Beautiful setting...for a wedding

Pros: Setting, classic hotel
Cons: Bathroom cleanliness (shower / tub door and shade) wifi, noise from wedding
Location: Great restaurants, cruising on the Thames, fishing (you need your own gear)
Had we known this is a wedding destination, we would not have stayed here on a weekend. We were given a room far in the back upstairs (62), but we could still hear the DJ both at 10:30 when we got back from an excellent dinner at The Coach and at midnight after we had a drink in the bar (hoping the noise would be over soon). Plus, since we were in the back, we heard all the bottles being thrown out into the bins. The wifi didn't work in the evening (it did earlier) so we gave up on making further travel plans. On the plus side, the room was a decent size and tastefully decorated with sitting chairs, and the bed was very comfortable. There was an espresso machine too. We didn't get conditioner or lotion in the room but the cleaning person was happy to provide them as well as help us get ice since our phone line wasn't working. I gave all this feedback to the person who checked us out.

Great location, very pretty and plenty of parking. Appeals to the mature person who may like jazz style lounge music. Friendly, helpful professional staff. Really welcoming. Lovely food and cocktails and wonderful breakfast served in a very nice room overlooking the river.

We really enjoyed our stay at the hotel. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The only hiccup was being charged a fee to use my credit card to put drinks on my room tab. The charge was not explained at check in or when I asked to charge the drinks to our room.

Faded gentility but what a location

Pros: The staff, location, the room
Cons: The infrastructure of the hotel needs work - I closed the window and a couple of large chunks of wood fell off the outside of the frame
Location: Great town, busy high street with a great choice of food
We had booked into the Compleat Angler as part of our anniversary celebrations, thankfully after having had a big lunch - this was necessary as no tables were available in either of their restaurants and the bar menu may have been great but sounded pretty boring and very average (surprising given the quality of the restaurants). There was also a wedding in progress - we were summarily told that we would be disturbed until 'no later than 12.30', and that the hotel was full so we could not move rooms (as it turned out we were above the venue, but could not blame the hotel for the 80's disco music we were assaulted with). The room though was very nice, excellent AC, large, clean, well equipped, good bathroom, and excellent bed and bedding. The two glasses of prosecco that arrived soon after, as it was our anniversary, helped dull the future pain of the disco. Thankfully the short walk across the bridge puts you in the town which has many pubs and a great selection of local and chain restaurants - the Giggling Squid supplied a rather excellent pair of curries. We had heard breakfast could be slow, but as it happens we were awake early so had that as the restaurant opened - so we had a delightful breakfast, well cooked, very hot with an excellent full English and smoked kippers whilst reading the Sundayapers in a virtually empty room - it started to get a little busy by 08.30 but even so it was very pleasant. Just to note, the staff were very good, all that we met were great.

Overall I'd Give the Place a Miss

Arrived at 4 to be told booked rooms not ready; given alternate rooms, one of which was over garbage facility. Tried to make reservation for tea; told there was no room, even for guests staying in hotel. Tried to make reservation for dinner. Hung up on, then when I called back told no reservations available even for guests in hotel. Got on open table to find that reservations were available, but by that point wasn't interested in eating there. Person answering phone spoke barely understandable English. Stayed there 30 years ago and had memorable stay. Won't go back.

The Compleat Angler is perfectly situated on the Thames, in Marlow. Beautiful bridge and church add to the atmosphere. The hotel is elegant and our room was roomy, newly decorated, extremely clean and quiet.
