Nice pool, nice room, great cookie

Posted Feb 17, 2016
Pros: The pool, the cookie, the comfortable bed.
Cons: The wifi needs improving as does the business center. The breakfast is not very good.
Location: There is a shopping mall nearby.
Check in staff were very friendly and we received our complimentary cookies which were very nice, we did want to ask for more. We were really looking forward to ordering room service but there were no vegetarian options at all, so this was a real let down, the restaurant was also very limited for vegetarian options but we did find the shopping mall nearby to get some food. The room was nice, spacious and the bed was comfortable. The pool was very nice to swim in. The casino is attached and is okay for a visit. We made the mistake of thinking breakfast was included in our room rate, but this was at an additional charge. If were aware of this we would not have eaten the breakfast as it was quite average, with bad coffee. The business center is a joke, and consists of a single computer and printer. I tried to do some printing and a young girl was watching youtube videos on the computer, I had to ask her to borrow the computer to do my printing. The printer was out of paper and I had to ask for more paper and the reception staff seemed reluctant to provide more paper - I don't mind paying for printing but if this is a hotel service then it should be done properly (and monitored so people are not wasting time on the one business center computer). The wifi was not very good. The doormen were friendly and professional.

Average hotel but good by local standards

Posted Dec 19, 2015
There are not many hotels to choose from in Calama. While this "only" an average Double-Tree Hilton, it is probably one of the best hotels in town. Check-in took more than 15min. Rooms are clean but a little bit run down. Beds are quite tiny for double-beds and hard mattress. I had prepaid my stay but at check-out there was no record of my payment available. Breakfast buffet is perfect and a high-light to start the day. The swimming-pool (though not heated) is very nice and perfect for a place in the middle of the desert.

Dear Guest: We apologize for the wait time during your check in and for requesting payment of your room on your departure, let me explain you that our processes are improving by training and supervising our team members, that is why your comments help us to know our weaknesses. We are having a change process at our building, in order to improve our facilities and for giving our guests a warmer welcome. Within that context, our pool was in maintenance during your stay, to guarantee the temperature of the water keeps all day long. We hope to see you again in the near future for giving you memorable experiences.

Calama on business

Posted Nov 17, 2015
Pros: Pretty much enjoyed it all.
Cons: Restaurant fare.
Location: Hotel is centrally located but away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown traffic. Great restaurants around for dining out.
The hotel in general is very comfortable and rooms are clean and well equipped. The restaurant does not have a great variety but is good overall.Third floor outside pool and lounge is very comfortable and protected from the elements.

moderate experience but overpriced and noisy

Posted Nov 3, 2014 on Hotels
hotel was ok but overpriced for what was offered. Hotel is ready for some modernization. Also, noise is a problem at there is a train line right across the street and horns were blowing at 4am. Get a room in the back of the hotel for more quiet. Pool was nice. Restaurant was ok but food mediocre and overpriced.

Great hotel, great location!

Posted Oct 29, 2014
Pros: The location, the comfort of the room and the breakfast buffet.
Cons: Everything was good.
Location: There's a great supermarket right next door. Easy access to the highway.
We stayed in this hotel one night and thoroughly enjoyed it. The lobby was spacious and nice, the restaurant where breakfast was served was fancy and a decent size. The breakfast buffet was fantastic, lots of choice. The room was big and comfortable. The pool area was quite classy and convenient. The location of the hotel was great: within easy driving distance to the highway and right next to a very good grocery store. We would definitely stay in this hotel again.

Great place for airport layover

Posted Jun 1, 2014 on Hotels
The Sonesta Calama is a big hotel that met our needs for a predictable, comfortable and convenient overnight. The people were nice, not too much English spoken, but they were patient with our attempts at Spanish. We were there on a Sunday, so it was a little eerily quiet. Big indoor pool and poolside lounge area, needs a little maintenance but we enjoyed it. Room service was good and very on-time. Good experience overall.

Oasis in the Desert

Posted May 17, 2014
Pros: Staff. Good accommodations within walking distance of the old town city center.
Location: Walk to city center markets.
The difference between a good trip and a bad one is largely the people that you meet. The staff at the hotel, particularly Jennifer at the front desk, were very friendly and accommodating.

Overnight in Calama

Posted Mar 12, 2014
Pros: Comfortable bed
Cons: Tea making facilities in the room
Location: We had hoped to have a tour of the big mine nearby but were advised that this had been suspended. Not aware of anything worth diverting for in the to
In truth, if there a way in the future to a avoid staying in Calama then I would choose it. If there are highlights then we failed to find them - Casinoes (attached to the hotel) do not appeal. Perhaps we were expecting or hoping for too much as it is after all a working mining town whose main reason for existence is the local mining activity. But prices are high and choice is limited so maybe we are entitled to be slightly critical. Overall our stay was pretty good though our room was in need of a little care and attention as wardrobes were badly scratched which rather reduced the general appearance. A good night's sleep in a comfortable bed was only disturbed by freight traiins announcing their arrival at nearby road junctions in the early hours. And breakfast was good so it served its purpose of getting us to the airport conveniently in the morning.
