On a tour through this iconic landmark, learn about the infamous zone for shipwrecks at the last manned lighthouse built on the South African coast.

Overlooking the picturesque West Coast Peninsula fishing villages, the Cape Columbine Lighthouse is recognizable by its red top and whitewashed façade. It has an intriguing history, having been built in response to the many shipwrecks that occurred here. Admire the elegant design and the scenic backdrop of the ocean and the lighthouse.

Gaze up at the impressive structure, which stands at the top of a rocky outcrop overlooking the ocean. Meet the lightkeeper who works full time in this intriguing site and chat about its rich history. The top part of the lighthouse offers spectacular views of the jagged coastline. See the structure at night, when its signal tower glows neon green.

Hear about the shipwrecks that occurred on the coastline before the construction of the lighthouse. The site shares its name with the wooden British ship Columbine that sank nearby in 1829. Following years of talks and designs, the protecting tower was finally built in 1936 with an innovative system comprising a light, a fog signal and a radio beacon.

Trek through the trails of the park and admire the daisies and fynbos shrubland on the ground and shorebirds flying overhead. Highlights include the paths of Jacobs Bay and the viewing platforms for dolphins at St. Helena Bay. Watch a dramatic ocean storm in winter.

Dine in Paternoster at one of the restaurants serving crayfish and other seafood specialties. The lighthouse also offers on-site cottages of varying sizes with cozy overnight accommodations.

Cape Columbine Lighthouse marks its eponymous cape in the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve. Drive west along the coast from Paternoster for 4 miles (6 kilometers) to get here. Pay to enter the lighthouse for a tour and get discounts for students, kids and seniors. Nearby attractions include the Stone Fish Studio and Gallery, the luxurious Gelukkie wedding venue and Paternoster Beach.
