depressing area, but hotelgrounds are ok

We stayed here two nights before flying home. Coming from the south East of Sicily the poorness of the area with most buildings empty or abandoned and very little signs of 'keeping the area nice' ( and we have travelled a bit and know the world as a whole is not a ' clean and tidy place' ) struck us. This was not a nice place to be. The hotelgrounds are ok, and they really try and make it a nice stay, but unfortunately, for us, knowing you were surrounded by complete ugliness, just did not feel right. At night, the nearby bar started belting out karaoke.
Upon arrival around 12.30 we had to wait over an hour before the room was ready, not a huge problem, but nothing was offered to compensate waiting. the drinks served we just had to pay. Fine. but not great service.
After a few hours the owner asked us if we wanted to change room, which surprised us, as we had not complained about the room. it made us think they wanted us to be somewhere else. The other room offered was up a flight of stairs ( as opposed to the ground floor room with private terrace we had) and did not look like a better room. still one room with a bunk bed and a double bed and a bathroom. So we did not understand why we were offered it, and declined. The food in the restaurant was mediocre and not according to the Italian Cuisine that you would expect, the pasta for instance was overcooked. in Italy.. all in all, for the money we had to pay for two nights I think the place was not worth it.
