Best Hotel in Catania

Posted Jul 31, 2017
Pros: everything
Location: very central and the Sunday market is a big plus
being a guest many times I can say that the Hotel and the staff are the best in Catania. It's always a pleasure to come back and, in the spring, summer the outdoor breakfast area is absolutely fantastic. I have been in other hotels in Catania and the Mercure deserves plenty of recognition for its staff and ambiance that can be defined as "old world". Looking forward to come back hopefully for longer periods....

Grand old hotel

Posted Apr 7, 2017
Pros: Location. Size. Room & facilities. Architectural style.
Cons: Housekeeping. Breakfast.
Location: Main shopping street Via Francesco Crispi is round the corner. Best local cafes/restaurants a short walk away around Piazza Vittorio Emmanuele
Lovely grand hotel opposite central law court with its own Alibus stop for an easy and cheap transfer from the airport. About a mile's gentle walk from the Piazza Duomo. Well appointed comfortable room with excellent shower. Breakfast fair. Reception staff very helpful, housekeeping could have been better.

Old hotel; upgraded & maintained well.

Posted Apr 4, 2017
Pros: Buffet breakfast. Location. Farmers Market on Sunday morning.
Cons: See Mosquito problem.
Location: In the newer, more recently built part of Catania. Walk B. Italia to the sea which takes you past local and international designer fancy shop.
Great buffet breakfast in a stately dining room. The room was large and well maintained though dated. Bathroom has been updated and plenty of counter space. Great location in the nicer part of Catania. There was an amazing farmers market in the parking lot/square right in front of the hotel Sunday morning. Great for people watching even if you didn't buy produce, honey, cheese, meat, olive oil, and more! The only downside -- there is apparently a mosquitos problem which required the windows be kept closed. I was there on a beautiful evening and was sorry to have the old air conditioning running all night.

Nice hotel in the centre of Catania.

Posted Jan 20, 2017
Pros: Staff nice and helpful, breakfast was nice
Cons: Needs a fresh coat of paint. Walls with marks etc. fitness room treadmill was inoperational the whole week I was there
Location: Right in the centre. Perfect location
The hotel was located in the centre, walking distance from everywhere I needed to go. Helpful staff, free underground parking, good breakfast.

Interesting older hotel

Posted Dec 2, 2016
The Mercure has a slightly faded grandeur to it, which I appreciated. It's opposite the Court House in a relatively quiet part of Catania, with bus stops for the airport, city center, and station right opposite. You can walk to the city center or train station in about 20 minutes. It's worth spending a little extra for a room with a view, because the best of these overlook Mount Etna, which is spectacular. I'd also stayed at the NH Centro, a few blocks away, but preferred the Mercure for the view, the stateliness of the facilities, and the restaurant/breakfast, both of which were better than the NH Centro's. (However, those who value more modern facilities might prefer the NH Centro.).

Hotel classed 4 star tired

Posted Aug 20, 2016
Pros: Views of Etna but had to pay for deluxe room with view Great help from reception printing off some train times and trips, including making changes
Cons: Restaurant service, bathroom upgrade

Good breakfast though Bathroom tired, hair in bath on arrival and room not made up until 4 .30 one day Terrible rudeness at train station when asking for train times - w are not tourist information - these were not provided sp we could not use the train.

Airport bus stops across the street

Posted Apr 5, 2016
Catania is not that large. You do not need to be exactly in the historical center to enjoy what it has to offer. The Mercure Excelsior may not be in the historical district, but it still is pretty centrally located. It is easily reached from the airport by the airport bus which stops across the street. The room that I had was large and the furnishings were in good shape. Breakfast is OK, but breakfast is almost always not better than that it Italy. Neighborhood is safe and not run down like the one that is closer to train station.
