Discover an impressive array of sacred treasures, including artworks and sparkling jewels, in the museum beside this historic Gothic cathedral.

With its notable blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, the Cathedral of Bolzano is one of the most arresting landmarks in the city’s medieval center. Examine its reddish and yellow sandstone façade, which features gargoyles and is crowned with a tall steeple. Head inside to explore the church’s spacious, three-nave interior.

The first church was constructed here in the late 12th century, though the building only gained its current Gothic appearance in the 14th century. The structure’s bell tower was a 16th-century addition designed by sculptor Hans Lutz von Schussenried. Gaze up at the towering steeple and admire its flying buttresses and ornaments.

Enter through the ornate Leitacher Törl portal, which faces onto the adjacent square. This portal is decorated with images of vineyard workers wearing traditional Bolzano costumes.

Inspect frescos depicting a pilgrim, Christ on the cross and other pious figures. In the past, mothers would come here to see the painting of the Madonna and leave money in the offering box in the hope that it would cure their children’s speech problems.

Marvel at the vaulted ceiling and magnificent pulpit. The panels on the pedestal are decorated with cherubs, while the pulpit itself is adorned with reliefs portraying the evangelists.

Venture inside the cathedral’s treasury museum to see its collection of medieval and Baroque ornaments. Highlights include solid gold and silver statues, lavish ceremonial garments and bibles from the Renaissance period. Learn about the history of the city and the role of the church in these intriguing exhibits.

Stroll around Piazza Walther, the square over which the church looms. Sit at one of the restaurant tables that overlook the square and take in views of the Dolomites. Look at the statue of the plaza’s namesake 12th-century lyric poet, Walther von der Vogelweide.

The church is open to visitors from Monday to Saturday, while the treasury museum opens from Tuesday to Saturday. The Cathedral of Bolzano stands in the medieval core of the city. Arrive at Bolzano Railway Station and walk northwest for 5 minutes to reach the cathedral. Visit some of its many nearby attractions, such as the Dominican Church and the Arge Kunst museum.
